Du Hoang Khang, 27 years old, is studying for a master's degree in Media Management in Poland. Previously, the young man from Soc Trang won a full scholarship from Arqus Alliance (an alliance of 9 universities in Europe) for 9 students, corresponding to the schools here.
With this scholarship, Khang is exempted from all tuition fees for the master's program and living expenses of 1,400 Euro/month (about more than 38 million VND).
This is something Khang never thought of 9 years ago, when he was still struggling to find his own path. This achievement came to Khang after a long journey of effort, even "being rejected dozens of times for different scholarships".
As a student majoring in Mathematics at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School for the Gifted (Soc Trang), although he was a very good student, Khang admitted that at that time, he had not yet determined what he liked. Encouraged by everyone, Khang registered for the major with the highest standard score at Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, which was General Medicine.
After being admitted to the school, in his first year, Khang realized that he did not have the same desire to become a doctor as his friends. He even took the opportunity to go to hospitals but still did not feel passionate.
After a semester of careful consideration, Khang decided to share this with his parents. “At that time, my parents thought that I was not thinking clearly. In fact, in my family, I was the first person to pass the university entrance exam. My parents were afraid that if I re-appeared, I would not be able to get into such a good school. But thinking carefully, if I did not have passion, I could not achieve the desired results, and I would not go anywhere in the future.”
So, despite his family's dissuasion, Khang decided to retake the exam. This time, he researched more thoroughly, clearly identified his strengths and the person he wanted to become. Finally, Khang chose to study International Business at the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City.
However, Hoang Khang still cherished the dream of traveling to many countries around the world. To “touch” this dream, from his second year, Khang began looking for opportunities to participate in international experiences.
In the summer of 2018, Khang signed up for an international volunteer project of AIESEC in Malaysia and spent 6 weeks "living in trial" in this country. In 2019, the male student continued to try and was one of 6 students to receive a full scholarship to do a one-week cultural exchange in Osaka and Kyoto (Japan).
The first experience of stepping out of the S-shaped strip of land and meeting friends from many countries around the world inspired Khang to think about studying abroad. That was also the time when the male student began to research some scholarships and conditions for studying abroad in different countries.
After graduating, Khang started preparing his application for a master's scholarship, but repeatedly failed because his application was not strong enough. The rejections fueled the Vietnamese man's motivation to "upgrade" himself both academically and in terms of work experience.
Khang proactively connected with the lecturer who had guided him in scientific research at university level, asking her for the opportunity to support and accompany him in research topics. In addition, Khang also focused on his full-time job at a university and built a fanpage to share his experiences and experiences. More than a year later, Hoang Khang had his first international publication as the main author.
At the same time, Khang continued to build his profile and apply for several other scholarships. But just like the previous times, this time the 9X continued to be rejected.
Not denying that every time he "failed" the scholarship, he felt sad and doubtful about his path, but Khang also said that experiencing many failures made him "tougher" and had to motivate himself to keep trying.
“Instead of blaming, I re-evaluated how far I could go, what my strategy was, and what I learned after each failure. In fact, after each failure, I found myself gaining more experience and moving further. Instead of being rejected in the first round, the next times, I received the opportunity to go to the final interview round.”
Nearly 20 rejections also helped Khang learn many lessons. By 2023, with developments in academics and research ability, Khang finally received a full scholarship from Arqus Alliance (an alliance of 9 universities in Europe) for all tuition and living expenses.
This scholarship also opens up opportunities for Vietnamese young men to study and live in 2-3 different countries during 2 years of study, meet international friends as well as participate in many activities at the Arqus alliance.
After 6 months of studying at Wroclaw University (Poland), Khang spent 6 months on exchange at Padova University (Italy). Currently, 9X continues to study at Maynooth University and does an internship in Ireland.
This journey also helped Khang realize his dream of exploring the world. Up to now, Hoang Khang has set foot in nearly 20 countries such as Germany, Austria, France, Czech Republic, Spain,...
Looking back on his 10-year journey since entering university, Hoang Khang believes that investing in education is a long-term investment that can make you feel like you are “losing money” at first. However, each time you “lose money”, it is an opportunity to learn a new lesson and a motivation to strive to constantly “upgrade” yourself.
“During those 10 years, I have never regretted spending money on education. These are investments that make me proud and help me become a better version of myself,” Khang shared.
