English is the subject that most candidates worry about the most. Because there is a difference in English proficiency between regions.
Despite the candidates' anxiety, teachers said that there will be no surprises in the exam layout. Students only need to review the 2023 high school graduation reference exam that the Ministry of Education and Training announced in early March this year to surely achieve good results.
The layout of the English exam is surprisingly difficult (photo: Trinh Phuc).
Accordingly, the English reference test remains stable compared to recent years, consisting of 50 questions with a test time of 60 minutes.
The knowledge units tested and the difficulty level are similar to the official exam questions for the 2022 high school graduation exam.
The knowledge units asked are mainly in the 12th grade English program, the number of questions in each section does not change, there are no new, strange, or extremely difficult questions.
Regarding the content of the exam, teachers said that the exam tests knowledge of phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, communication functions, writing skills, and reading skills.
Specifically: Phonetics: vowels, consonants, stress; Grammar: verb tenses, tag questions, passive sentences, comparative sentences, prepositions, adverbial clauses of time, reduced clauses, infinitives;
Communication function: daily communication situations; Vocabulary: word structure, fixed phrases, idioms, choosing words appropriate to the context, determining the meaning of words in context.
Reading skills: General questions (determine the main idea of the reading passage); Detail questions (determine specific information or details in the passage, determine the meaning of words in context);
Inference questions (inferring information not directly stated in the reading, inferring the outcome/next action or drawing conclusions about the reading... through analyzing the text and the author's tone in the passage).
Writing skills: Errors in verb tenses and pronouns; How to use words to avoid confusion; Find synonyms; Combine sentences.
Regarding the difficulty of the exam, it is assessed that about 84% of the questions are at the level of recognition and understanding, and the rest are application and high-level application questions. The differentiation of the exam still focuses on vocabulary and inference questions of the reading comprehension but the differentiation is not high.
The number of questions at the high application level decreased, the number of questions at the application level increased compared to the official exam in 2022. Grammar, vocabulary, error finding questions... are familiar knowledge, appearing a lot in the 12th grade high school curriculum, however, questions about idioms are still questions to get high scores and require students to have a rich vocabulary.
According to experts, the 2023 high school graduation exam will have the same structure as the reference exam and high school graduation exams in recent years, so students only need to study diligently to achieve the desired results.
