Vietnam will welcome the third largest number of international visitors in Southeast Asia with 17.6 million international visitors by 2024, surpassing Singapore, currently only behind Malaysia (25 million) and Thailand (35 million).
The impressive number of international arrivals has made Vietnam the leading country in the region in terms of tourism recovery compared to 2019 before the Covid-19 pandemic. Vietnam has recovered 98%, far surpassing all neighboring countries, including Thailand (87.5%) and Singapore (86%). Continuing the recovery momentum, Vietnam welcomed nearly 4 million visitors to Vietnam in the first two months of the year, up 30.2% over the same period last year.
According to Bloomberg, there are several factors driving Vietnam’s growing appeal to tourists. A new e-visa policy, introduced in 2023, simplifies the entry process for tourists and allows stays of up to 90 days (three times the previous limit). Vietnam has also exempted visas for many countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and Spain.
In addition, the arrival of leading hotel brands. And the fact that many establishments have received Michelin awards has created a global platform for Vietnamese cuisine. All of these things make Vietnam increasingly attractive to luxury travelers.
There is no sign that Vietnam’s growth will slow down, according to Bloomberg. By the end of 2025, Vietnam plans to break its tourist arrival record, with 23 million international visitors. In the near future, the new Long Thanh International Airport is expected to be completed, significantly increasing Vietnam’s ability to receive international visitors.
"That shows Vietnam's bigger, longer-term ambition to surpass Malaysia in the list of most-visited countries in Southeast Asia, behind only Thailand, the only remaining competitor," Bloomberg asserted.
