More than 600 hectares of forest in Ham Thuan Nam district were exploited to build Ka Pet irrigation lake, with a capacity of more than 51 million m3, and 1,844 hectares of replacement forest will be planted elsewhere.
Ka Pet Reservoir has a total capital of more than 874 billion VND, expected to start construction next year and be completed in 2025. The project was approved by the National Assembly in 2019 and adjusted at the end of June. The project's goal is to supply water for agriculture; industrial zones, daily life, environmental improvement and water regulation in the downstream area of Ham Thuan Nam.
The lake has a capacity of over 51 million m3, built in My Thanh commune, on an area of over 700 hectares, of which over 619 hectares are natural forests, including 3 types: special-use, protection and production.
According to a representative of the Binh Thuan Provincial People's Committee, the forest area exploited to make way for the project is under the management of three units, including: Song Mong - Ka Pet Protective Forest Management Board, Nui Ong Nature Reserve and Binh Thuan Forestry Company. Field demarcation work is being carried out to strictly manage the forest area outside the boundary when forest exploitation begins.
Currently, the Provincial Management Board of Agricultural and Rural Development Investment Projects is preparing for bidding, selecting consultants to develop plans for exploitation and valuation of forest products, as a basis for auction. The winning bidder will be handed over the forest to exploit valuable timber and forest products.
To compensate for the area of natural forest that was "erased", the locality will have to replant more than 1,800 hectares in other places in the province according to the provisions of the Forestry Law (the investor must replant forests equal to 3 times the area of natural forest whose use purpose was changed).
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Thuan is compiling a list of forest planting registrations of forest owners in the province to advise the Provincial People's Committee to approve the design documents for replacement forest planting. The total cost of reforestation is nearly 177 billion VND.
