Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) has just received the award for Best Sustainable Bond Issuance Bank in Vietnam 2024 from Global Banking and Finance Review Magazine.
The award affirms BIDV's pioneering position in issuing green bonds and sustainable bonds in Vietnam; and affirms BIDV's commitment to deploying sustainable finance to contribute to the National Green Transformation Strategy.
Recognizing the role and significance of sustainable growth, green economy, and circular economy for the economy, in the Business Strategy for the period 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030, BIDV has identified the goal of "aiming towards sustainable development" throughout banking operations with the message of "pioneering in creating sustainable values".
BIDV pursues the strategy of positioning the Green Bank brand, becoming a market-leading bank in ESG practices and sustainable finance to gradually approach international standards on green finance, implementing the roadmap to transform into a net-zero emission bank (Net-Zero Bank) by 2045.
In the period of 2023 - 2024, with 2 successful issuances, BIDV has mobilized VND 5,500 billion (equivalent to USD 220 million) of capital from green bonds and sustainable bonds, continuing to maintain its position as the leading ESG Bond issuing credit institution in the domestic market. The World Bank is the organization participating in providing technical support for both issuances in terms of building a bond framework, establishing criteria for evaluating eligible projects, issuing external evaluation opinions, disclosing information as well as consulting on appropriate implementation plans to best meet market expectations. From that capital, BIDV implements preferential green credit programs for priority areas such as: renewable energy; clean energy; low-carbon production and consumption industries, adapting to climate change, etc.
As of the third quarter of 2024, BIDV has sponsored green credit for 1,680 customers with 2,068 projects/plans, with green outstanding loans reaching VND 75,100 billion, accounting for about 3.9% of BIDV's total outstanding loans and about 11.3% of the total outstanding green credit of the entire economy. With the current green credit scale foundation, BIDV plans to continue to increase outstanding loans and the proportion of green credit annually and strive to maintain its position as one of the leading banks in terms of market share and scale of green credit provided to the market.
