" If U22 Indonesia doesn't win, it will be a big problem. I feel like the referee is playing a prank on me. If I don't win, I probably won't go home," coach Indra Sjafri commented on the referee's mistaken final whistle in the 32nd SEA Games final.

U22 Indonesia's failed celebration

U22 Indonesia celebrated in vain when the referee blew the whistle in the last minute of extra time, when the score was 2-1. In fact, it was the referee's signal for U22 Thailand to take a free kick. Coach Sjafri and his colleagues ran onto the field to celebrate. Ironically for U22 Indonesia, they conceded a goal in the next situation.

" The referee blew the whistle, but then blew it again. I didn't pay much attention because I was concentrating on the game. Dewangga rushed at me to celebrate, plus two members ran onto the field, which confused me ," Mr. Indra Sjafri explained.

U22 Indonesia Coach: Being pranked by the referee, if I lose I won't dare go home - 1

Coach Sjafri celebrated after mishearing the referee's whistle.

After Thailand U22 scored the equalizer, the match became tense. At the beginning of the first extra time, Indonesia U22 raised the score to 3-2. The players of the archipelago team rushed to provoke their opponents to respond. The two teams clashed, causing the referee to issue 5 red cards.

The head of the Indonesian U22 delegation, Pol Sumardji, was pushed down and had a bloody mouth. After the match, members of the Thai U22 team proactively went to the opponent's room to apologize. The Thai U22 and Indonesian U22 players also put aside their grudges, shook hands and exchanged shirts after the match ended.

U22 Indonesia won 5-2 (3 goals were scored in extra time when they had an extra player). The team from the archipelago won the historic SEA Games gold medal after 32 years of waiting.

Many members of the U22 Indonesia team cut down the net at the Olympic Stadium (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) to take home as souvenirs. Mr. Indra Sjafri said the team had asked for permission from the host country Cambodia before doing this. Returning home, the U22 Indonesia team also held a parade through the streets of Jakarta. The players sat on a double-decker bus to the cheers of tens of thousands of fans.
