During the General Offensive and Uprising in the Spring of 1975, when the troops gathered to advance simultaneously to liberate Saigon, the Politburo proposed the policy of liberating all the islands in the Truong Sa archipelago, in order to achieve complete victory in the resistance war against the US to save the country.

At dawn on April 14, 1975, naval commando units of C.75 - the force tasked with liberating the islands in the Truong Sa archipelago, divided into 3 groups and secretly landed on Song Tu Tay island.

At 4:30 a.m. on April 14, 1975, our army opened fire to liberate Song Tu Tay Island. After more than an hour of fighting, we completely controlled the battlefield, and the national flag was immediately raised on the flagpole on the east side of the island.

The liberation of Song Tu Tay Island caused the enemy's defense system on Truong Sa archipelago to fall into a serious crisis. Faced with our consecutive victories on land and at sea, the Forward Command agreed on a plan to capture the remaining islands with the Military Region 5 Command.

On the same day, in response to the wishes of the people and armed forces on the battlefield, including the army and people of Saigon - Gia Dinh city, the Politburo approved the proposal to name the campaign to attack Saigon after Uncle Ho by the Campaign Command.

The telegram of the Politburo signed by comrade Le Duan, First Secretary of the Central Executive Committee, sent to the Campaign Command on April 14, 1975 stated: "Agreeing that the Saigon Campaign will be named the Ho Chi Minh Campaign". The news that the campaign was named after Him reached the entire people and army, creating new strength, promoting preparation and readiness for the campaign.

Also on April 14, 1975, the Politburo and the Central Military Commission approved the final plan to liberate Saigon - Gia Dinh. The plan determined that the attack would take place simultaneously in 5 directions: Northwest, Northeast, East, Southeast, West and Southwest; to carry out a quick, decisive attack, destroy and completely disintegrate the enemy, protect the people, and protect economic and cultural facilities in the city.

After final approval of the campaign plan to liberate Saigon - Gia Dinh, the Politburo affirmed its determination: The military and political opportunity to launch a general offensive on Saigon is ripe. We need to seize every day, promptly launch attacks in all directions, without delay. If we delay, it will not be beneficial both politically and militarily. Timely action at this time is the surest guarantee for complete victory.
