Recently, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases received a male patient nearly 60 years old in emergency condition.

Mr. T., a construction worker from Dong Anh, Hanoi, was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of right chest pain and severe shortness of breath, especially when inhaling. The prolonged chest pain became unbearable for the patient, forcing his family to take him to the emergency room in the middle of the night.

The doctor is examining the patient.

Based on the examination, the doctors diagnosed Mr. T. with pneumothorax, a dangerous condition in which air enters the pleura, preventing the lungs from expanding, causing severe difficulty breathing. He was given timely emergency care by placing a drainage tube and providing breathing support.

After conducting comprehensive tests and examinations, doctors discovered that his lungs had multiple balloons and punctured alveoli, creating air pockets that caused the lungs to collapse, leading to respiratory failure. The cause of the illness was believed to be his history of heavy smoking.

Mr. T. is a heavy smoker, with an average of about 1 pack/day for many years. Although he has recently reduced his smoking due to his declining health, the damage caused by smoking has silently accumulated in his lungs, leading to serious problems such as pneumothorax.

Pneumothorax occurs when air enters the pleural space, causing the lung to collapse and stop expanding normally. This condition can lead to respiratory failure and, if not treated promptly, can be fatal.

In Mr. T's case, the doctor decided to perform thoracic endoscopic surgery to completely treat this condition, avoiding the risk of pneumothorax recurrence in the future.

Mr. T. is not the only case of health problems caused by smoking. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), smoking is the cause of more than 8 million deaths each year worldwide, with millions of people suffering from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

In addition to the direct harm to smokers, passive smoking (inhaling smoke from others) also causes many dangerous diseases.

Another case is Ms. Pham Thi M. (60 years old, Dan Phuong, Hanoi), who suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to living in an environment with a lot of cigarette smoke.

Ms. Mui said that her husband had been addicted to cigarettes for more than 30 years, and she had been exposed to secondhand smoke for a long time. As a result, she discovered that she had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and is now facing symptoms of coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

Ms. M's condition is a reminder of the serious harm that cigarette smoke can cause to public health, especially for those living in smoky environments without the ability to protect themselves.

To protect your health and reduce the harmful effects of smoking, quitting smoking is the best solution. Although it may be difficult, quitting smoking brings many health benefits. After quitting smoking, the body will begin to recover, reducing the risk of respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

According to doctors, quitting smoking as soon as possible will help improve lung function, reduce lung damage and stop the progression of the disease.

Smoking not only causes dangerous diseases for smokers but also seriously affects those around them and the environment.

The case of Mr. T. and Mrs. M. is a warning about the unpredictable harmful effects of tobacco, especially on the respiratory system. Quitting smoking is the only way to protect your own health and that of the community.

Smoking causes a series of dangerous diseases for the respiratory system, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer and pneumothorax.

According to medical experts, cigarettes contain thousands of toxic substances, many of which cause inflammation, damage the lungs and cause gradual deterioration of lung tissue.

Long-term lung damage from exposure to chemicals in cigarette smoke can lead to many serious problems, such as:

Chronic bronchitis: When the airways become inflamed and produce too much mucus, making breathing difficult.

Emphysema: A disease that causes the alveoli to enlarge, gradually destroying the lungs and reducing their ability to exchange gases.

Lung Cancer: Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, one of the deadliest cancers.
