On the afternoon of June 17, Quang Ngai Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital announced that its doctors had successfully treated a 5-year-old girl whose esophagus was pierced by a chicken bone.
Doctor Nguyen Thi My Le checks the health of a child patient after removing a foreign object from the esophagus.
Previously, on June 10, Quang Ngai Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital received patient PYC (5 years old, in Tinh Phong commune, Son Tinh district, Quang Ngai province) for examination with symptoms of painful swallowing and excessive drooling.
After examination and X-ray, the patient was transferred to the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology for hospitalization and monitoring. Here, the doctors ordered an ultrasound of the patient's neck and chest. The ultrasound results showed a foreign object penetrating the esophageal wall, causing esophageal edema.
To remove the foreign object from the patient's esophagus, doctors performed a digestive endoscopy. After 30 minutes, the foreign object removed was a small piece of chicken bone in the cervical esophagus.
After performing endoscopy to remove the foreign object, the patient was alert, able to eat and drink, had less sore throat and continued to be monitored and treated at the Pediatric Gastroenterology Department.
Chicken bone removed from child's esophagus by doctors
The patient's family said that before being admitted to the hospital, the child had eaten chicken porridge. Afterwards, the child felt uncomfortable, had difficulty eating and drooling a lot, so the family took him to the hospital for examination.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi My Le, in charge of the Pediatric Gastroenterology Department, Quang Ngai Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, this is the fourth case of foreign body removal this year. This case is much more dangerous than the previous cases. Because the patient is young and has slow mental and motor development, the illness lasted for 3 days before the family took the child to the hospital, the sharp foreign body pierced the esophageal wall, easily causing esophageal perforation.
"Parents need to pay attention to their children's diet, be more careful when preparing food and feeding them. When detecting unusual signs such as difficulty breathing, difficulty eating, frequent vomiting..., the child should be taken immediately to a specialized hospital for examination and timely treatment," Dr. Nguyen Thi My Le advised.
