Does leaving the computer on all night affect sleep?

Nighttime sleep is an important stage for our bodies to recover from a tiring day of work. It may come as a surprise to many that turning on the computer is even worse than having a smartphone next to you while sleeping. Here are some reasons why.

RGB lights coming from computers are annoying

Light makes it difficult to sleep

The first aspect is the lighting, especially the RGB light strip. It only performs aesthetics without any practical function. Meanwhile, RGB light will affect sleep.

Humans are biologically programmed to sleep when it is dark and wake up when it is light. Meanwhile, RGB lighting at night makes it harder for people to fall asleep. Moreover, it makes the quality of sleep worse, especially if using RGB color-changing effects. All of this makes the body rest improperly, leading to incomplete sleep.

Fan noise

Most computers have fans to help dissipate heat. At the very least, you’ll have a pair of fans: one for the power supply (PSU) and one for the CPU. Modern graphics cards often shut down their cooling by going into 0dB mode when idle. Other machines can have multiple fans, with 3-6 being the norm.

Let’s say they are all running and spinning at minimum speed. Even if they seem to be quiet, people can actually hear them. Having something going on all night will make for poor quality sleep. As a result, we may wake up with headaches or other problems due to the constant noise at night.

The quiet of the night is affected by the noise from the computer fan.

Heat generation

This aspect is not important in winter, but when the weather is hot like now, this can increase the temperature of the environment. When the computer is running, no component can be below room temperature, and the difference can be much larger, so the amount of heat released will affect the room temperature.

For example, at night, when the room temperature is 25 degrees Celsius, the temperature of other components on the computer can increase by about 10 - 15 degrees Celsius when operating. As a result, turning on the computer at night will cause the room temperature to be higher, affecting the quality of sleep. Even if the air conditioner is turned on, it will have to work at a higher capacity and affect the energy consumption.
