This afternoon (September 21), the 2024 Editor-in-Chief Forum “Solution journalism: Directions for traditional journalism” (Forum) organized by the Journalists and Public Opinion newspaper will officially take place at Novaworld Phan Thiet, Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province.
Forum 2024 is a place for leaders of press agencies, press management agencies... to exchange and express their views on the issue of why it is time for solution journalism to be one of the trends that Vietnamese press agencies are aiming for.
Before the Forum, reporters from the Journalists and Public Opinion newspaper had a discussion with a number of leaders of press agencies about the goals of solution journalism as well as the expectation that the Forum will have strong solutions, helping solution journalism have a clear and effective orientation.
Journalist Nguyen Manh Hung - Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Thu Do Newspaper.
Solution journalism inspires action
Talking to reporters, Journalist Nguyen Manh Hung - Editor-in-Chief of Tuoi Tre Thu Do newspaper said that solution journalism can be understood as in addition to activities of reflection, criticism, and struggle, the press also plays the role of giving advice, proposing solutions and measures for implementation instead of just raising issues without a beginning or an end. This means that the press plays a more active and responsible role towards the issues of the country and society.
Going into details, Journalist Nguyen Manh Hung pointed out that the characteristics of solution journalism are often reflected in the main factors: Press agencies, leaders of press agencies; journalists accompanying the government, businesses, people... in finding possible solutions to solve the problems that society is facing; when reflecting or criticizing, the press always sets out its responsibility to participate in solving or proposing solutions to solve that problem; mobilize and call on the press public in particular and the whole society in general to participate in proposing solutions to specific problems; the press directly implements solutions to a number of problems that are suitable to its capacity and conditions...
"Solution journalism is not only a tool for providing information but also a source of inspiration for action. When a problem is presented with specific solutions, the public is not only aware of the existence of the problem but can also see how the problem can be solved. This encourages individuals, organizations and communities to participate in finding and implementing solutions," Mr. Hung emphasized.
According to journalist Nguyen Manh Hung, when the press presents practical solutions and demonstrates their effectiveness, it helps build confidence in the possibility of positive change. The success of the presented solutions not only increases confidence in the methods and policies, but also motivates the community to participate in solving the problems. Mr. Hung gave an example: Publicizing successful projects in improving air quality can promote similar policies and motivate other communities to adopt these solutions.
The Vietnamese press is currently facing many challenges, including fierce competition from digital media, maintaining public trust, and meeting the growing information needs of society. Although traditional press has made important contributions to providing information on events and issues, there is still a lack of focus on proposing specific solutions to social problems. On the eve of the 2024 Editor-in-Chief Forum “Solutionary Journalism: Directions for Traditional Journalism”, Journalist Nguyen Manh Hung hopes that the solutions presented at the Forum can help fill this gap by focusing on providing practical and creative solutions. Along with that, Mr. Hung also hopes that these solutions will not only help the press improve the quality of information but also enhance the role of the press in addressing social challenges.
Dr. Vu Thi Anh Hong - Editor-in-Chief of Customs Magazine.
The press's interpretation is useful information to help authorities promote positive points and overcome limitations.
According to Dr. Vu Thi Anh Hong - Editor-in-Chief of Customs Magazine, solution journalism is necessary and is the goal of press agencies, especially in the context of social media channels dominating the press today. If the press plays a good role in explaining, it will further affirm its role, position, impact and effectiveness on society.
Presenting the current reality, the Editor-in-Chief of Customs Magazine said that there are many issues facing the press: between increasingly high requirements and tasks and the ability, conditions, and resources to meet them; between the goal of attracting public attention and trust and the orientation of policy communication information...
In the public sector, there is also a mindset from State agencies that still underestimates the need to respond when the press reflects pressing information, negative aspects, and limitations in this field. In reality, there are issues that the press reflects with basis, but there is also information that is untrue, incomplete, and not true to the nature of the problem. There is crisis information that appears on social networks and spreads quickly in the press. "If organizations/individuals, especially State agencies, do not promptly respond, give clear and specific messages about those events, it will be very difficult for the press to orient and lead public opinion, raise recommendations and solutions," said Ms. Vu Thi Anh Hong.
On the contrary, according to Dr. Vu Thi Anh Hong, there is also the idea that the press always stands outside to observe, peek, and criticize, heating up the limitations and weaknesses of state agencies, without a sympathetic and supportive perspective, while state agencies themselves also have objective and subjective difficulties and are trying to find solutions. Therefore, it is not uncommon for state agencies at all levels to be hesitant to openly share information with the press.
As for the public, Dr. Vu Thi Anh Hong also said that the public has not really identified the press as a place to send their suggestions and recommendations to solve pressing problems and difficulties in policy making and implementation; in general, businesses are reluctant to report to the press.
On the contrary, there are individual cases where businesses/people connect with the press to heat up their difficulties in the press, even on social networks, to put pressure, creating waves in some newspapers protesting the regulations and practices of State agencies in implementing policies.
With the above issue, expecting that before the 2024 Editor-in-Chief Forum "Solution journalism: Directions for traditional journalism", Dr. Vu Thi Anh Hong hopes that the Forum will be a place to find specific, practical and effective solutions for the direction of traditional journalism; the interpretation of the press will be useful information to help authorities promote positive points, overcome limitations and shortcomings and further improve management efficiency. At the same time, it will act as a bridge from the people/businesses to the State agencies, helping people/businesses express their thoughts, aspirations and constructive and positive recommendations to competent authorities for support and timely resolution.
Editor-in-Chief of Can Tho Newspaper Truong Van Chuyen.
Solution journalism gives readers a more realistic and complete view.
Journalist Truong Van Chuyen - Editor-in-Chief of Can Tho Newspaper, said that solution journalism is an approach in the field of journalism, focusing on finding and presenting feasible solutions to social problems, instead of just reporting on negative events, or difficult problems, or information just to satisfy the public's curiosity.
“Currently, social networks have set the task of enhancing combativeness and creating consensus in society for the mainstream press. Reality shows that it is the overwhelming, uncontrolled information that is not bound by the operating standards of mainstream press agencies that has caused readers to become skeptical of information on social networks and instead turn to searching for and verifying information from mainstream press agencies. That shows that the role of mainstream press is still highly valued,” Mr. Truong Van Chuyen emphasized.
In particular, the Editor-in-Chief of Can Tho Newspaper emphasized that the goal of the solution journalism approach is to provide readers with a more realistic and complete view of the problems that people and society are facing, helping to promote civil rights more effectively. Solution stories can take many forms, but share some key characteristics such as: identifying the root causes of a social problem; highlighting an answer or answers to that problem...
According to Mr. Truong Van Chuyen, in the age of information development, the press is not only a source of information but also plays an important role in promoting social development.
In particular, solution journalism has shown that it is a positive trend, an advanced approach of mainstream journalism, in line with the movement of journalism in the current period. “Developing according to this trend, press agencies not only demonstrate their role as accompaniers with the Party, State, localities and people in solving practical and urgent problems of society and the country, but also open up for themselves 'a new direction' as the theme of the 2024 Editor-in-Chief Forum has set out,” Mr. Chuyen emphasized.
