Since September 9, some wards in Long Bien District, Hanoi have been in a “new normal” state. Restaurants serving food and essential goods have reopened, all in the form of take-out. After nearly a week, many restaurants are still as crowded as the first day.

Go out in the rain to buy pho

According to Thanh Nien , on the morning of September 15, despite heavy rain in Hanoi, many people in Ngoc Lam Ward (Long Bien District) still went to restaurants to buy take-out. Many people came early, wearing raincoats, bringing lunch boxes, and hot food containers. After many days of closure to prevent the epidemic, many people said they were excited to buy their favorite dishes such as vermicelli, pho, rib porridge, etc.

Mrs. Thuy's restaurant sells about 200kg of pho noodles and 70 - 80kg of beef every day.

Ms. Tran Thi Thuy (49 years old, owner of a pho restaurant on Nguyen Son Street, Long Bien District) said that after 5 days of opening for take-out, the number of customers is still high. Her family woke up at 2:30 am to prepare ingredients to sell to customers in time. On the days of reopening, her family sold about 200 kg of pho noodles and 70 - 80 kg of beef. The selling price is still the same as before the social distancing period, 40,000 VND/bowl. Customers can order more items and depending on specific requests, a bowl of pho ranges from 45,000 - 50,000 VND/bowl.

“Although we only sell take-out, my family is very excited to welcome customers and sell again. After being closed for more than a month, seeing people come to buy and enjoy the atmosphere makes me very happy and excited. My family is open in the morning from 5am to 1pm, in the afternoon from 5pm to 9pm,” said Ms. Thuy.

According to Ms. Thuy, to ensure safety when reopening, she prepares hand sanitizer, wears masks and always reminds customers to line up and keep their distance. She hopes the epidemic will end completely so she can sell directly and serve customers.

Many people do not hesitate to wear raincoats to buy take-out food.

“In addition to taking preventive measures, my family has also been fully vaccinated. Being closed and sitting in one place is boring, so I always hope to be open for a long time. Customers come and bring lunch boxes to buy while it's hot. Everyone and I try to be quick so that people don't have to wait too long. Now there is still a shortage of employees because only those close to home will come to work, those far away or in other provinces cannot return to work yet,” she said.

Busy making products to sell to customers

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Dung (owner of a noodle shop in Ngoc Lam Ward) shared that compared to direct sales, there are not as many customers, but being able to open for take-out is a positive sign. Nearly 50 days of closure left her family without income, so she feels very happy to be able to reopen.

People in Ngoc Lam Ward (Long Bien District) are excited when food stalls are reopened.

“Since hearing the news of reopening, everyone in my house has been busy making goods to sell to customers. The first day had the most customers because after many days of not being able to eat noodles, they came to buy a lot. Staying at home for many days made me feel very stuffy, so when I reopened, I tried to implement epidemic prevention measures to sell longer. I hope that in the near future, the epidemic will be controlled, the shop will be able to sell directly, at that time there will be more customers, and income will also be higher,” Ms. Dung confided.

From 6am, Mr. Nguyen Viet Hoang (39 years old, owner of a pho restaurant) and his wife were busy selling to customers. Customers bought take-out, so he prepared many boxes in advance, working quickly so that customers would not have to wait too long.

Most of the reopened shops have prepared hand sanitizer for customers.

“People who come to buy are also very happy because after a long period of social distancing, they can finally buy a bowl of pho. I can't sit down and eat at home, but I'm happy because I can work and earn some income to stabilize my life and take care of my two children. I didn't have anything to eat last month, so I just hope the epidemic will be well controlled so I can gradually reopen. Now it's difficult to import goods from the provinces because it's not convenient to travel, but my family is trying to overcome it to have ingredients to make pho," Mr. Hoang shared.

Vermicelli and pho are the most popular dishes.

Despite the rain, Ms. Dang Thanh Hang (24 years old, in Ngoc Lam Ward) still brought a lunch box to a pho restaurant to buy take-out. After nearly 2 months of cooking at home, she went to restaurants to buy food to change the taste and save time.

Mrs. Dung and her staff quickly sold noodles to customers.

Everyone was happy when the food was available for take-out.

“Today I bought 4 bowls for the whole family, with some fried dough sticks because everyone in my family likes to eat them. Since the social distancing period, I have been staying at home, so when I heard about the sale again, I often went to buy them. Yesterday I bought noodles, today I bought pho for a change because the breakfast I cook at home is usually easy to make dishes like instant noodles and ready-made porridge,” said Ms. Hang.

Mr. Dinh Hong Quan (30 years old, living on Ngoc Lam street) said: “As adults, we can eat anything, but we try to change the dishes so that the children don't get bored. Before the social distancing, we had to get up to prepare breakfast for the whole family, but now that the restaurants are open again, it's convenient, we can just go out and buy something. Hopefully the epidemic will be controlled so that life can return to normal as before, and we can travel more comfortably."
