Wastewater treatment plant 'shelved' for 8 years is ready for handover and operation in Hanoi

TPO - After 8 years of being "shelved", the Viet Hung Urban Area Wastewater Treatment Plant will be handed over by HUD to the Department of Construction for operation in April 2025.

Since 2014, after submitting for approval of planning and organizing construction bidding, the Wastewater Treatment Plant of Viet Hung Urban Area (Long Bien District) built by Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUD) has officially started construction. By 2017, the project was completed.

The wastewater treatment plant has a capacity of 7,600 m3/day and night, with the goal of treating all domestic wastewater for more than 20,000 residents in Viet Hung Urban Area.

However, many years after its completion, the factory is still “shelved”. Mr. Nguyen Van Thang (residing in Viet Hung Urban Area) said that the project has been abandoned for a long time. At one point, weeds grew tall, covering the walkways and fences.

At the question-and-answer session of the 20th session of the Hanoi People's Council held on December 11, 2024, delegates asked the City People's Committee to clarify the reason why the Wastewater Treatment Plant, which was completed many years ago, still cannot be put into operation.

Responding to this content, the Department of Construction said that the reason was that the official management and operation unit had not been selected. In addition, there were some difficulties and problems in receiving assets; unit prices for forming bidding packages...

These difficulties have been reported by the Department of Construction to the City People's Committee. The Department has also completed the budget for bidding for operation management for the period 2025 - 2027. The bidding for the operating unit will be conducted in the first quarter of 2025.

Regarding this issue, HUD Representative said that the unit is applying for an Environmental License (because the previously granted discharge license of the Wastewater Treatment Plant has expired).

The degraded items inside the Wastewater Treatment Plant are currently being renovated and repaired by HUD to ensure requirements. It is expected that the unit will officially hand over to the Hanoi Department of Construction in April 2025.

A construction item in the project is being urgently constructed by the unit.

The wastewater treatment plant is located next to Long Bien Park.
