(Dan Tri) - Rough seas combined with high tides caused landslides at My Khe beach, Quang Ngai city. The poplar forest that served as a barrier against the waves was uprooted by the high tide.
Since early December, bad sea weather combined with high tides has caused serious erosion at My Khe beach, Tinh Khe commune, Quang Ngai city.
The most severe landslide is located south of My Khe beach, about 200m long. This area was eroded by high tides, encroaching 1.5 to 2m into the shore, creating a 0.5-1m high "sand wall" separating the beach from many construction works. The poplar forest that was a breakwater was also uprooted by the high tides.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Linh, a resident of Tinh Khe commune, said that the erosion is getting faster and faster, making local people worried. Every year, high tides encroach 1-2m into the shore, washing away crops and the wave-blocking pine forest.
"The erosion is getting faster and faster. The pine forests planted 30-40m from the coast were also uprooted by the waves," Mr. Linh worried.
According to Mr. Linh, the landslide is moving into the central area of My Khe beach, where there are many shops serving tourists. If the landslide continues to develop complicatedly, it will greatly affect tourism activities here.
Mr. Vo Minh Chinh, Chairman of Tinh Khe Commune People's Committee, said that every time the sea is rough, My Khe beach erodes. However, in the past 5 years, the erosion has become more complicated and faster than before.
"The most severe landslide area is located south of My Khe beach. Inspection shows that the landslide has not caused any damage to infrastructure, only a part of the pine forest that blocks the waves has been damaged. The commune is closely monitoring the landslide and high tide situation to have appropriate response measures," said Mr. Chinh.
My Khe beach is about 7km long, is the most beautiful and famous beach in Quang Ngai, attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
