Explaining this decision, Australian Minister for Home Affairs Stephanie Foster said that the use of DeepSeek's products, applications and web services poses a high level of security risk to the Australian Government.

Under the new guidance, from 5 February, government agencies and public organisations must identify and remove all presence of DeepSeek web products, applications and services on all systems and mobile devices used by the Australian Government. The guidance also requires preventing access, use or installation of DeepSeek on government systems and mobile devices.

In late January 2024, the DeepSeek R1 AI tool developed by a Chinese startup was launched on the market, causing a stir in the AI world. Deepseek is advertised as having the same efficiency as high-performance AI tools currently on the market, but with much lower development costs.

Several countries including South Korea, Ireland, France, Australia and Italy have expressed concerns about DeepSeek's data practices, including how the company behind the tool collects, stores and uses users' personal data, as well as how this data is used to develop or train their AI technology.
