The fact that K-pop artists continuously submit nominations and then "come up empty-handed" at the Grammys has sparked controversy over whether it is too much for Korean stars to want to conquer the prestigious golden trophy.

As one of the most prestigious awards in the music industry, the Grammys always attract a lot of attention every awards season.

When the 2025 Grammy nominations were announced, Variety said it was a battle of the world's top female artists. But the audience's attention was focused on the fact that no K-pop artists were included.

Grammy has no place for K-pop

94 Grammy nomination categories include music genres from pop to classical, singer Beyoncé leads the list with 11 nominations, setting a record for the artist with the most nominations in history with 99 times.

Other top contenders include Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Post Malone with seven nominations each, while Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan have six.

But Ariana Grande also missed out on nominations in the three most important categories, even though her album Eternal Sunshine was considered very successful both commercially and professionally, showing the fierceness of the 2025 Grammys.

This year, many K-pop artists also participated enthusiastically, such as BTS (Jungkook, V, Jimin, RM, J-Hope), Lisa (BlackPink), Le Sserafim, Twice, when submitting nominations in many important categories.

However, no K-pop artists made it onto the 2025 Grammy nomination list.

The most controversial was the self-nomination of BlackPink's youngest member, Lisa.

Despite hitting the international stage hard, Lisa's songs have constantly faced criticism about quality, plagiarism scandals, and most recently, lip-syncing accusations.

The fact that K-pop idols "went empty-handed" at the Grammys for two consecutive years quickly attracted public attention, not only making it to the top search list in their home country of Korea, but the topic also directly entered the top 9 hot searches on Weibo.

"K-pop is just Korean pop music. It's not in the same market from the beginning and hasn't achieved anything remarkable. If you want to listen to English music, you can listen to European and American music, so why listen to K-pop sung in English?"

"This year is the year of the female singer, which round will K-pop get to?"; "In forcing itself to follow the US UK model, K-pop has lost its identity, causing the quality of music to decline" - are comments from the audience on Weibo.

In fact, although the Korean music market is prominent in Asia, compared to an international awards ceremony, digital music achievements or album sales are not everything.

Especially with the Grammy, the awards are all judged by a panel of experts. In addition to achievement factors, the products must have artistic value.

While the lyrics of K-pop songs are catchy, most of them are cliché and don't carry much meaning, so it's understandable that they have difficulty making it onto the nomination list.

What opportunities for K-pop?

According to The Korea Times, after the nomination list was announced, some American newspapers published a "skip list" with K-pop artists who were ignored by the Grammys.

The Associated Press noted that BTS members RM, J-Hope and Jimin — who have all released solo songs this year and enjoyed success — were not nominated.

Meanwhile, Billboard expressed regret for Lisa, stating that if she were nominated for Best New Artist, Lisa would be the first K-pop artist to do so. Although BlackPink has been a huge success globally, they have yet to receive a Grammy nomination.

USA Today reported that despite K-pop's growing influence, as demonstrated by BlackPink and Seventeen performing at stadiums across the United States, the Grammys still lack a dedicated space for these artists.

The magazine suggested that since the Grammys have expanded categories like Best African Music Performance, they could consider adding a category for K-pop to recognize their contributions to world music.

The influence of K-pop artists is undeniable, they absolutely deserve to be honored at a major award like the Grammy.

BTS has been nominated three times from 2021 to 2023, the super hit APT. by Rosé (BlackPink) and Bruno Mars is dominating the global music charts. With many positive signs, the audience still hopes that K-pop artists will soon conquer the prestigious gold cup.
