Apple develops foldable iPhone with self-healing ability

Apple has been working on a foldable iPhone for several years now, with some rumors suggesting the device will launch around mid-2026 or 2027. The company has been experimenting with foldable panels and hinges in partnership with Samsung and other manufacturers as it seeks to stand out from the competition because the current technology is fragile and doesn't meet Apple's standards.

According to the new patent, the self-healing material could be used across the entire display or just in the flexible areas of the display housing, where most manufacturers have run into problems. Interestingly, the self-healing technology occurs after the coating has been dented and can start working when heat, light, or an electric current is applied to it.

Self-healing can occur in a self-healing material layer without any external intervention. Additionally, self-healing can be initiated or accelerated by heat, light, external electric current, or other external stimuli.

When heat is used as a stimulus for the self-healing process, the display housing may include transparent conductors that form a heating layer within the display housing. The heating layer may be used to generate heat to stimulate the self-healing process. The layer may be used to generate heat in response to user input, on a predetermined schedule, or while the device is charging.

This is just a patent, which doesn't mean the technology could be on a future foldable iPhone. However, the patent does suggest that Apple is exploring some of the possibilities for a foldable iPhone.
