UK, France urge US to approve aid package for Ukraine

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron plans to warn politicians across the Atlantic that they are risking Western security by delaying a new aid package to Ukraine when he visits Washington DC, The Telegraph reported on April 7.

According to the British newspaper, in the face-to-face meeting, the British Foreign Secretary plans to urge US House Speaker Mike Johnson to find a way to get Washington's military aid package to Kiev passed.

Earlier this year, London pledged around £2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) in aid to support Ukraine's war and the European Union (EU) has offered a further €50 billion ($54 billion).

But US President Joe Biden's $95 billion bill, which includes about $60 million in security assistance to Ukraine, is being blocked by some Republicans in the US House of Representatives.

Ahead of his visit to the US capital, Mr Cameron and French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné used a joint article in The Telegraph to call on allies to “do more”.

“We are both absolutely clear Ukraine must win this fight. If Ukraine loses, we all lose,” Mr Cameron and Mr Séjourné said.

“France and Britain alone cannot solve these challenges. Together, however, we can rally others to join us in overcoming them,” the two diplomats wrote in an article marking the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale – a series of agreements between France and Britain that paved the way for improved relations between the two neighbours.

Foreign Office sources said that during his visit to the US, Mr Cameron would repeat a message posted on social media last week in which he said: “Britain has given money to Ukraine this year. So has the European Union. America needs to do the same.”

Ukrainian forces are struggling with worsening ammunition shortages and delays in supplying artillery shells from allies that have left Kiev's forces outnumbered by the enemy by as much as 6:1.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also warned on April 7 that Ukraine would lose the war unless the US Congress passed a military aid package .
