On the afternoon of September 24, information from the authorities of Kien Hai district, Kien Giang province said that at noon on September 23, some students of Kien Hai Secondary and High School had lunch at the school canteen.
By the afternoon of the same day, some students of this school had symptoms of suspected food poisoning, such as: stomachache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever.

The school board and teachers then took the 12 students to the hospital. Some parents bought medicine for their children, while others took their children to the Kien Hai District Medical Center for examination.
As of the morning of September 24, 12 students were hospitalized at Kien Hai District Medical Center. Later, 1 student had low blood pressure so the Kien Hai District Medical Center transferred him to Kien Giang Provincial General Hospital for monitoring and treatment; 3 students were transferred to the mainland by their families; currently 8 students are being treated at Kien Hai District Medical Center. At present, the health status of the students is basically stable.

Currently, the school has directed homeroom teachers to monitor the students' situation and coordinate with parents to temporarily suspend students suspected of poisoning from school for treatment, and to visit and encourage students being treated at medical facilities.
Also on the morning of September 24, the Medical Inspection Team of Kien Hai district took food samples from the school canteen and sent them to the province for testing to determine the exact source of the poisoning.
