According to MacRumors , based on some internal information, in the period before Apple announced AirPods Pro in October 2019, the company considered renaming these wireless headphones to AirPods Extreme.
The name was suggested by one of the company's leadership team members, but the company ultimately decided to keep the AirPods Pro branding after many employees objected to the change. Apple has also used the 'Extreme' suffix in the past for the AirPort Extreme router, which was first released in 2003.
AirPods Pro were originally planned to be called AirPods Extreme
The AirPods Pro name is more in line with Apple’s strategy and naming conventions across its product lines. In addition to AirPods, Apple offers regular and Pro versions of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and there’s a good chance there will be a regular version of the Apple Vision Pro headphones in the future. However, Apple has used a few other suffixes for its more premium products over the years, such as the AirPods Max and Apple Watch Ultra.
Apple went on to release the second-generation AirPods Pro in September 2022 and improved the headphones with a USB-C charging case and a few other features a year later. The third-generation AirPods Pro are said to be coming in 2025.
