Lively and dynamic is what we felt when we met Tran Tuan Anh in Da 2 village, Cam Duong commune. Born in 1994, after graduating from the University of Mining and Geology, Tuan Anh was accepted to work at a business in his hometown with a good income. The job was stable, but in 2019, the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, causing difficulties for the business, forcing him to quit his job.

During his time at home, Mr. Tuan Anh accidentally read an article on the internet about the snail farming model. Finding the model interesting, he learned more in books, newspapers and went to some models to learn. Coming from a farming family, he was attached to the fields since childhood, so he quickly grasped the semi-natural snail farming process, so he started practicing.

The family did not have a pond or rice field to carry out the model, so he built 3 breeding tanks on the garden ground, an area of 200 m2 , using the technique of lining the bottom of the tank with tarpaulin, adding mud, and pumping water to create a habitat. With a starting capital of 5 million VND, he bought 13,000 snails to release. After more than 4 months of breeding, in October 2019, he harvested the first batch of commercial snails and selected parent snails for breeding.

From the initial success, in 2020, Tuan Anh decided to expand the farming scale to 14 tanks, an area of 1,200 m2 , including commercial snails and seed production. The time for 1 farming season (from planting to harvest is from 3.5 to 4 months), snails can reach 25 snails/kg, raising for another 2 months, the snails start to reproduce. The food source for snails is quite rich, commonly duckweed, squash, squash, sweet potatoes and leaves. He takes advantage of the entire area around his garden, building a trellis to grow more vegetables and fruit trees, both as food and to create shade for the snail tank. On the surface of the tank, he releases duckweed for the snails to cling to and reproduce naturally.

Depending on the scale, quantity, and density of snails, food must be added once every 3 to 4 days. In particular, in the winter months, snails are less active, so they do not need to be fed a lot or continuously. This is the stage when snails “hibernate”, only providing moderate food, because excess food in the pond combined with too much snail waste will pollute the water source.

The most important thing in snail farming is to have a stable and clean water source, which can be taken advantage of from natural streams or wells.

On average, each year, he produces and purchases, supplying the market with 8 - 12 tons of commercial snails, more than 15 million seeds, the main consumption market is in the province and provinces such as Lai Chau, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Ha Nam ... With the selling price from 70,000 VND/kg to 90,000 VND/kg of commercial snails and more than 500,000 VND/kg of snail seeds, each year he earns more than 100 million VND in profit. Not only developing his own economy, Mr. Tuan Anh also guides farming techniques, provides seeds, links production and consumes products for snail farming households in and outside the province.

The snail farming model of 9X guy Tran Tuan Anh has exploited the available potential of the locality, opening up a new direction for developing specialty farmed animals with high economic value for the family as well as expanding to people in rural areas.
