7 years ago, Hai volunteered to be the head teacher of a charity class in Phu My ward (District 7, Ho Chi Minh City). After teaching for a while, he realized that he needed to have pedagogical skills, so he went to school and just completed a second degree from Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

Follow and lure lottery ticket sellers to charity classes

That charity class was established probably more than 40 years ago. Many teachers have taught the class, including Hai's mother.

Hundreds of poor children have learned to read, write and do calculations from this class. In 2017, Phan Trung Hai, a student, volunteered to teach the class until now.

Hai knows the circumstances of almost every child in the ward. Some children cannot go to school because they have to work early. Some do not have identification papers, others follow their parents to work here and there...

So the charity class Hai is in charge of not only teaches children to read and write but also helps equip them with life skills.

"Most of the children have little time to be taught by their parents. Because many of them have to earn a living early, in addition to learning to read and write, the class wants to create a playground and activities to help equip them with life skills, so that at least they know how to protect themselves and recognize bad and dangerous things," Hai said.

Many times when running on the street or sitting in a coffee shop, seeing some kids selling lottery tickets or dancing with fire at intersections, this friend born in 1998 will follow them, go to their rented room and convince them to go to a charity class.

Hai's class also had students from several neighboring wards in the district, and even from Nha Be district who came to ask to study.

The locality and some benefactors support, but sometimes Hai also has to spend his own money to buy more pens and notebooks for the children to go to class.

Since the day I started teaching charity classes, I suddenly realized that my passion and strength is education, even though I studied transportation before. So I decided to study pedagogy to have better teaching methods for the children.

"Young teacher" passes on to children a passion for sports

Hai is a pencak silat athlete, who won second prize in the men's ganda event at the 2022 Ho Chi Minh City Sports Festival.

So after school hours, Hai suggested that the ward open a martial arts class to help children improve their health, and also create a playground for children after stressful work and school hours.

During that training process, Hai realized that 8 students in the martial arts class had the potential for boxing. In early 2020, he connected with the District 7 Sports and Culture Center to help them practice and develop. Thanks to that, some students have become professional athletes, with the opportunity to study and practice.

Loving and caring for children, especially disadvantaged children, must have been in this guy's blood. So when choosing to do scientific research at Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Hai immediately chose the topic of how to support disadvantaged children to develop more comprehensively.

"I remember that during his lifetime, Uncle Ho had a lot of love and special care for children.

I remember that teaching, try to do what I can within my ability, hoping to give back some love to the less fortunate children," Hai shared.
