Ngoc Viet charity class, founded by Mr. Huynh Quang Khai and his wife, has helped dozens of children in difficult circumstances access literacy.
Deep in a small alley of Hiep Thanh Ward, District 12, Ho Chi Minh City is where the Ngoc Viet charity class has been quietly shining for over a decade. Here, under the dedication of Mr. Huynh Quang Khai and his wife and kind teachers, dozens of children in difficult circumstances have access to literacy.
In addition to teaching time, Mr. Khai also regularly organizes extracurricular activities to help children have fun and experience. (Photo: Quang Khai) |
From a simple idea of wanting to help children who do not have the opportunity to go to school, Mr. Khai has persistently built the Ngoc Viet class. Although he started out as a tour guide, without any pedagogical expertise, he has constantly strived to self-study, exploring each word and each calculation with the hope of being able to impart knowledge to the children.
His bookshelf filled with textbooks from grades 1 to 5 is a clear testament to his dedication. Each student who comes to his class has his own lesson plan, and he guides them wholeheartedly, helping them absorb knowledge in the most effective way.
Still remembering the early days of establishing the class, Mr. Khai and his students had to face many difficulties. The small, cramped attic of the family suddenly became a place to nurture dreams and light up the faith of the children. Every evening, the sound of reading and laughter echoed throughout the attic, dispelling the gloomy atmosphere of a small street corner.
Over time, the number of his students increased, from the initial 10 students, the classroom gradually became cramped. The attic was increasingly crowded and there was not enough space. Mr. Khai spread tarps and lit candles for the students to sit on the floor. From a classroom without walls or roof, it was impossible to study during the rainy season thanks to the support from friends and old customers, the classroom gradually improved with a roof and the number of tables and chairs increased.
The students here are between 8 and 19 years old, with different circumstances: some are orphans, some are mentally retarded, some have to drop out of school to work... But they all share a common desire to learn and gain knowledge.
Like Huynh Chi Bao, 17 years old, despite working hard as a garment worker, he still takes time to go to class to learn to read and write. Or Khanh Ly, 13 years old, had to drop out of school when her family moved to Saigon, but since her parents moved to Saigon for work, they could no longer afford to support her to continue studying. After that, her parents found a charity class and sent her to Mr. Khai.
And it is thanks to the stories of children like Huynh Chi Bao and Khanh Ly that have added to the beautiful picture of Ngoc Viet charity class. This is not only a place to impart knowledge but also a family, where children are loved, shared and grown up together.
In addition to different circumstances, the students also have different levels of proficiency. From those who just know the letters to those who can read and write fluently. These things require teachers to be patient and creative in teaching. For some students, a lesson must be repeated many times to understand. But Mr. Khai is not discouraged, always encouraging and motivating the students. He often says: "It's okay, we just take it slow and learn ."
For over 10 years, Ngoc Viet class has not only been a place to impart knowledge but also a place to nurture young souls. Children not only learn to read and write but also practice necessary life skills, and share joys and sorrows.
Mr. Khai is not only a teacher, but also a father, an older brother, always giving his children care and love. Besides teaching them, he also imparts life lessons to them, helping them form good personalities.
His dedication has been recognized and highly appreciated by the local authorities. Ms. Mai Thi Thu Thao, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Hiep Thanh Ward (District 12, Ho Chi Minh City), shared: " Mr. Khai is a shining example of compassion. With his enthusiasm and dedication, he has brought joy and hope to many children."
