6 cases where you should choose to travel by train instead of plane

Việt NamViệt Nam22/11/2023

If you want to carry a lot of luggage, leisurely sightsee, save time and money, then you should choose the train, especially when abroad. Everyone thinks that planes are faster than trains, so trains are only for people who have free time. In fact, many train trips take less time than flying. You can also carry more luggage comfortably, see more sights.

Save time

Many countries have developed high-speed rail networks that allow for short-distance travel between cities by road, ensuring safety and comfort. Contrary to popular belief that flying is the fastest, in many cases, traveling by train is more time-saving.

For example, it takes 2 to 3 hours to travel from Busan to Seoul (South Korea) by train, while it only takes 1 hour by plane. However, when traveling by plane, you need to be at the airport at least 90 minutes before take-off, and after the plane lands, it takes at least 45 minutes to get off the plane, get your luggage, and leave the airport.

On the other hand, train stations are often very close to or right in the city center, while most airports are in the suburbs, taking longer to travel. So, to go from Busan to Seoul (more than 300 km), it takes a total of 3-4 hours by train, and 4-5 hours by plane. Not to mention, trains are rarely late these days and are not affected by the weather, while flights can be delayed or canceled at any time.

Cost savings

Train tickets are not always cheap, some are as expensive as business class on an airplane. However, there are almost certainly more train ticket options than plane tickets on any route. You can freely choose the time, station, seat type, and suitable bed. Some countries like China even serve standing train tickets for inter-provincial routes, which cost only as much as a taxi ride in the city.

For example, flying from Paris to Bordeaux (France), you can choose from several types of air tickets from 1.5 million VND to 5 million VND (flight time is about 1 hour and 20 minutes), and if traveling by train, there are many types from 400,000 VND to 2.2 million VND (time on the train is about 2-3 hours). Thus, the train ticket is only half or one-third of the cost of buying a plane ticket, and the total travel time can be shorter than by air.

Avoid the hassle

Air travel is the mode of transportation with the strictest security requirements regarding luggage, time, and documents. All passengers and their belongings must go through the scanner. If you accidentally bring a razor, a fork, or a few pieces of jackfruit in your carry-on luggage, you will have to leave it at the airport. In addition, your documents must match the name on your ticket. Even if there is a single letter wrong, you will have to go through the name change procedure.

When traveling by train, many countries also have X-ray machines, but the regulations are much lighter than those of air travel. Passengers can freely bring food, drinks, and personal items, as long as they do not endanger themselves or others. In some countries such as Japan, Korea, or Europe, you will not even meet any staff of the train company during the trip, because everything depends on the passengers' self-awareness: about time, check-in, luggage. Therefore, tourists do not have to stress about any procedures.

For most airlines, regulations on weight, size, and quantity of luggage sometimes make it difficult for travelers. But if you travel by train, you can bring luggage much more comfortably, and can even send bicycles, motorbikes, cars, and pets.

Fully equipped and comfortable

Many people think of air travel as the most luxurious, but today many trains around the world offer more facilities and amenities than planes. For the same ticket price, the seats and legroom on trains are often more spacious than on planes, and the aisles between rows are also wide, allowing passengers to stand up and move around at any time. There are also many toilets and hand-washing stations on a train, and some trains even have free wifi, TVs in each compartment, and adjustable air conditioning for each seat.

On planes, you can hardly find "dining rooms" or "cafes", many routes do not provide food and drinks, if they do, it is according to a fixed menu. On trains, you can find many choices of food, drinks, snacks, some trains even have restaurant compartments, allowing passengers to eat while enjoying the scenery. The cost of meals on trains is often much more affordable than meals on planes. For example, high-speed trains in India serve meals for only 30,000-40,000 VND, and drinks are approximately 10,000 VND per person.

Buy tickets easily

Airline tickets are often a significant part of the total cost of a trip, so many travelers spend weeks, even months, hunting for cheap tickets, sometimes having to buy from intermediary websites with the risk of encountering many problems. Meanwhile, buying train tickets is much easier, ticket prices fluctuate less and there are many options, and payment methods are also simple. Some countries even design automatic train ticket machines at all stations, passengers only need to do a few minutes of operation at the station, just like at an ATM.

Health Guarantee

Airlines have strict regulations on passenger health, advising people with cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory diseases, people who have just had surgery, and women in late pregnancy not to fly. Some passengers who want to fly must have a doctor's certificate, bring their own medication, and sign a waiver of liability from the airline.

But if you travel by train, the regulations on passenger health are much more relaxed, causing less negative impacts and if there is a medical incident, it is also easier to handle. Therefore, many tourists choose the train to ensure their health and mental comfort.
