Last year, Russia announced plans to increase the size of its armed forces by 30%, to 1.5 million soldiers.

"According to the Defense Ministry, from January 1 to July 4, more than 185,000 people were accepted into the ranks of the armed forces, including about 109,000 people in the reserve force," Medvedev said.

In a video posted on Telegram, he said that nearly 10,000 new recruits had joined last week alone, following the uprising by the Wagner mercenary group.

"I would like to note in particular that the attempt at armed uprising does not affect people's thinking and determination to join the army," Medvedev said.

President Vladimir Putin ordered a “partial mobilization” of reserves last September. He also said there was no need to call up more reserves at present.

Mr Medvedev, who was appointed to oversee the country's military production earlier this year, has said factories are working around the clock to supply the army in Ukraine.

In comments on Tuesday, he suggested that assets seized from criminals should be handed over to the Russian military.

Prosecutors, the FSB security service and other agencies should work with the Russian Defense Ministry to “take measures to transfer such equipment to the military as soon as possible,” he said.
