15 provinces request the Central Government to support rice for famine relief

The Department of Social Protection (Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs) said that, implementing the direction and guidance of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, as of January 10, 15 provinces facing difficulties in resources, including Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Cao Bang, Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, Quang Binh, Nghe An, Bac Lieu, Dak Nong, Ninh Thuan, Dak Lak, Ha Giang, Kon Tum, Bac Kan, Binh Phuoc, have requested the Central Government to support more than 14,169 tons of rice to relieve hunger for 181,057 households with 935,466 people.

Of which, support for Tet hunger relief is more than 11,551 tons of rice for 770,125 people; support for pre-harvest hunger relief is more than 2,617 tons of rice for 165,341 people.

Based on the local proposals, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has compiled and submitted to the Prime Minister for consideration and provision of famine relief rice to the proposed provinces (more than 7,014 tons of famine relief for 60,551 households with 467,653 people on the occasion of the Lunar New Year and the 2024 crop year for the provinces of Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Cao Bang, Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, Ha Giang, Kon Tum).

As of January 10, the Prime Minister has signed a decision to support more than 3,545 tons of rice for 236,335 hungry people during the Lunar New Year in Soc Trang province.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs has requested localities to develop plans and proactively arrange local budgets and socialized resources to support over 1,000 tons of rice for poor and near-poor households and people in difficult circumstances.

Previously, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs also sent an official dispatch to the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities and the National Office for Poverty Reduction requesting to strengthen the implementation of social security and safety work during the Lunar New Year.

Accordingly, to contribute to taking care of people's lives so that they can have a joyful and warm spring, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs requests the People's Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities to develop plans to visit, give gifts and provide social assistance to people with revolutionary contributions, policy beneficiaries, the poor, near-poor, people in difficult circumstances, and social protection beneficiaries, ensuring the right subjects, regimes, publicity and transparency.

In addition, localities synthesize the number of households and people at risk of hunger to take care of and provide timely support during Tet; proactively mobilize resources, including local budgets and mobilize other legal social resources to provide timely support to the subjects; strengthen the protection and care of children, especially children in special circumstances, children in ethnic minority and mountainous areas...
