The British International School Hanoi (BIS) has been a member of the British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) since 2015. The organisation currently has over 100 member schools, with the aim of collaborating and sharing innovative educational methods and creating unique learning experiences for students. FOBISIA organises over 70 events for students each year, including sports, academics and arts activities across the region. The FOBISIA Primary Mathematics Competition was first held in 2010 and has become an annual event.
In this year’s competition, students worked in teams of four to solve mathematical challenges that tested their computational, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The competition offered a variety of tasks that encouraged creativity and teamwork. One interesting challenge required teams to build an umbrella system using paper cups, which helped students maximize their problem-solving skills. Teams strategized effectively, demonstrating their understanding of structure and ability to coordinate within a time limit.

In another challenge, students designed and built a balloon-powered car, putting mathematical and engineering concepts into practice. The atmosphere was electric as teams tested their products, demonstrating their creativity and understanding.
Hyewon, a Grade 6 student at BIS Hanoi, expressed her excitement and nervousness when participating in an international math competition for the first time. Competing with students from many international schools across Asia, she saw this as an opportunity to challenge herself and develop her skills.
Minchan, another BIS student, also shared: “I am very happy to participate in the FOBISIA Primary Mathematics Competition. This is a great event where I get to meet friends who share the same passion for mathematics.”

The individual round added drama to the competition, requiring students to apply their mathematical knowledge accurately and demonstrate perseverance. BIS Hanoi students performed excellently and won many medals, including Cheng Hsun winning a Bronze medal, Chaeha winning a Silver medal, Minchan winning a Gold medal and scoring the second highest individual score of the entire competition.
The FOBISIA 2025 Primary Mathematics Competition is not only a playground for students but also provides opportunities to learn, collaborate and enjoy the fun of mathematics.
Ms. Charlotte Beasant - Head of Primary Mathematics at the British International School BIS Hanoi, Head of the event organizing committee, shared: “The FOBISIA 2025 Primary Mathematics Competition is not only a playground for students but also provides opportunities to learn, collaborate and enjoy the joy of mathematics. Students are able to connect and make new friends, share memorable experiences and strengthen team spirit and problem-solving skills.”
“The skills and knowledge gained from the competition will certainly help them achieve success in their future pursuit of mathematics. We look forward to witnessing the development of these young mathematicians in the future,” said Ms. Charlotte.
