10 commodity groups increased, only transportation group decreased

The socio-economic report just released by the General Statistics Office on the morning of September 6 shows that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August 2024 was stable. Of the 11 main groups of consumer goods and services, 10 groups had a slight increase in price index; only the transportation group had a decrease in price compared to the previous month.

Specifically, 10 groups of goods and services with increased price indexes include: Housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials increased by 0.29% mainly due to the following reasons: House rental prices increased by 0.45% due to increased demand for housing in some localities when preparing for the new school year; gas prices increased by 0.67%, due to the fact that from August 1, 2024, domestic gas prices will be adjusted to increase according to world gas prices...

The food and catering services group increased by 0.27%, causing the overall CPI to increase by 0.09 percentage points, of which: Food increased by 0.19%; foodstuff increased by 0.28%, causing the overall CPI to increase by 0.06 percentage points; eating out increased by 0.26%.

The group of other goods and services increased by 0.2%, of which, the price of administrative and legal services increased by 1.91%; jewelry increased by 1.89%; environmental sanitation services increased by 0.52%; watch and jewelry repair increased by 0.28%. On the contrary, the price of handbags, suitcases, wallets decreased by 0.18%; watches decreased by 0.05%.

The group of medicines and medical services increased by 0.18%, of which the price of inpatient examination and treatment increased by 0.29%; outpatient examination and treatment services increased by 0.11%. The reason is that in August 2024, some localities continued to apply new medical service prices according to Circular No. 22/2023/TT-BYT dated November 17, 2023 of the Ministry of Health regulating the unification of prices of medical examination and treatment services under health insurance between hospitals of the same rank nationwide and guiding the application of prices and payment of medical examination and treatment costs in some cases.

The post and telecommunications group increased by 0.15%. Of which, the price of regular mobile phones increased by 0.52%; the price of fixed phones increased by 0.25%.

The beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.15%, mainly due to high consumer demand during Vu Lan Festival and during the tourist season, specifically: Fruit juice prices increased by 0.42%; energy drinks increased by 0.29%; cigarettes increased by 0.25%; bottled beer increased by 0.13%; and alcohol of all kinds increased by 0.12%.

The education group increased by 0.14%, of which the price of writing instruments increased by 0.5%; paper products increased by 0.45%; stationery and other school supplies increased by 0.2%. In addition, the price of educational services increased by 0.13% due to some public universities, private high schools, and private kindergartens in some provinces increasing tuition fees for the 2024-2025 school year.

The culture, entertainment and tourism group increased by 0.12%, mainly concentrated in the following groups: Prices of foreign tourism services increased by 0.72%; sports and fitness equipment increased by 0.38%; hotels and guesthouses increased by 0.24%; movies and music increased by 0.16%. On the contrary, domestic tourism decreased by 0.29% due to companies reducing prices to stimulate demand.

The group of household appliances and equipment increased by 0.09% due to increased labor costs. Of which, refrigerator repair services increased by 0.64% compared to the previous month; air conditioner repair services increased by 0.59%; household appliance rental increased by 0.56%...

The garment, hat and footwear group increased by 0.05% due to increased shopping demand in preparation for the new school year.

The transport group alone decreased by 1.98%, reducing the overall CPI by 0.19 percentage points. According to the General Statistics Office, the main reasons were: Diesel oil prices decreased by 7.05%; domestic gasoline prices decreased by 5.83% due to the impact of price adjustments during the month; passenger transport prices by rail decreased by 4.09%; used cars decreased by 0.28%...

According to the General Statistics Office, in August 2024, the consumer price index was stable compared to the previous month. Compared to December 2023, the CPI in August increased by 1.89% and compared to the same period last year increased by 3.45%. On average, in the first 8 months of 2024, the CPI increased by 4.04% compared to the same period last year; core inflation increased by 2.71%. Core inflation in August 2024 increased by 0.24% compared to the previous month, increased by 2.53% compared to the same period last year.

According to the representative of the General Statistics Office: On average, in the first 8 months of 2024, core inflation increased by 2.71% over the same period in 2023, lower than the average CPI increase (4.04%), mainly due to the prices of food, foodstuffs, electricity, education services, medical services and gasoline, which are factors affecting the CPI increase but are excluded from the list of core inflation calculations.
