10 records Djokovic can achieve this year

VnExpressVnExpress11/02/2024

Tennis player Novak Djokovic holds many prestigious records in the tennis world, but still has many milestones to conquer.

Djokovic is the owner of four of the most important records in the history of men's tennis: most Grand Slams (24), most Masters 1000s (40), most ATP Finals (7) and most year-end number one rankings (8). In addition, he dominates the rest in many other statistics. Late last year, Nole said he wanted to break as many milestones as possible. Here are the records he could equal or surpass in 2024.

Number of Wimbledon titles

Roger Federer has won Wimbledon a record eight times, with Djokovic second with seven. The Serb missed out on equalling Federer's record, losing to Carlos Alcaraz in last year's final. But having won four of the last five Grand Slams, Nole is expected to match or surpass Federer's Wimbledon record.

Number of US Open titles

Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Federer share the record of five US Open titles, while Djokovic has four. If he repeats his 2023 triumph, Nole will join his seniors in the record books in New York. Djokovic also holds the US Open record for most finals (10).

Oldest Grand Slam champion

If Djokovic defends his title at the US Open in September 2024, he will become the oldest man to win a Grand Slam. The current record belongs to former player Ken Rosewall, who won the 1972 Australian Open at the age of 37 years, one month and 24 days. Djokovic will turn 37 on May 22.

Oldest tennis player to hold world number one position

Federer holds the record for the oldest person to top the ATP rankings. He was 36 years and 320 days old when he reached the top spot on July 24, 2018. Djokovic will break that record if he reaches the top spot in April this year. Currently, the Serbian is 600 ATP points ahead of second-placed Carlos Alcaraz.

Defended all four Grand Slam titles

Djokovic will become the first man to defend all four Grand Slam titles if he wins Roland Garros and the US Open this year. He has won back-to-back Australian Opens and Wimbledon, but has never done so at the other two. Only one man has ever defended three of the four Grand Slams: Federer. The Swiss legend did it at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Number of Indian Wells Masters titles

Despite missing the last four years, Djokovic holds the record of five Indian Wells Masters titles with Federer. The Serbian won in 2008, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Nole will surpass Federer if he wins next March.

The 2024 Indian Wells Masters, taking place from March 6-17, is one of nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments. In terms of prestige, Indian Wells is only behind the four Grand Slams and the ATP Finals. The first Masters of the year has repeatedly won the title of the highest quality ATP 1000 event.

Number of Miami Masters titles

Djokovic has won the "Sunshine Double" four times, winning two consecutive Masters events in the US, the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open. In Miami alone, Nole won the tournament six times, equaling former US tennis player Andre Agassi - his former coach. Djokovic will surpass Agassi if he wins the title in his first return to Miami since 2019.

Number of Grand Slam quarter-finals

Despite not winning the 2024 Australian Open, Djokovic has just equaled Federer's record of 58 Grand Slam quarter-finals. The Serbian tennis player is likely to take over this record right after Roland Garros this year.

Number of Grand Slam wins

Djokovic has won 366 Grand Slam matches, just three behind Federer's record. He is almost certain to surpass the Swiss in this statistic this year. In terms of matches played at Grand Slams, Djokovic is also just 14 behind Federer's record of 429. The Serbian will break that record if he reaches the quarterfinals of the remaining three Grand Slams this year.

Number of ATP titles

Jimmy Connors holds the prestigious record with 109 titles, Roger Federer is second with 103 and Djokovic is third with 98 ATP titles. Djokovic needs 12 titles to surpass Connors. In theory, Nole can break this record in 2024 if he plays many tournaments and wins them all. But in reality, at the age of 36, Djokovic only chooses to participate in important tournaments. It is not easy for him to win, in the context of young tennis players progressing very quickly.
