Doctor Vo Hung Vien, Director of Binh Son District Medical Center (Quang Ngai) said that many poor patients who come here for medical examination and treatment cannot stay here to fully recover from their illness. "This is a sad thing, so the brothers in the unit have done a small act of kindness for the poor," said Doctor Vien.
Patients surprised to receive money
In late July, we were at Binh Son District Medical Center (Quang Ngai). At this time, the Outpatient Department was still crowded, but the treatment rooms and patients had already gone to buy rice for lunch.
Staff of Binh Son Medical Center (Quang Ngai) provide food money to Ms. Nguyen Thi Dao (70 years old), a poor inpatient treated there.
At the Oriental Medicine Department of Binh Son District Medical Center, we saw several clean wooden tables set up and about 10 patients eating. When asked, these patients said that the money to buy the food was "given by the hospital".
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dao (70 years old, in An Quang village, Binh Thanh commune, Binh Son district) said that her children work far away, so she lives alone. Every day she collects scrap metal and sells it to make money to live. When she is sick, the neighbors give her whatever she eats.
Recently, she was so sick that she asked a neighbor to take her to Binh Son District Medical Center for inpatient treatment. That afternoon, Ms. Dao planned to use the small amount of money to buy food, but around 4 p.m., the nurse came to call her to the Accounting Department of Binh Son District Medical Center.
Here, when the staff read her name and handed her 55,000 VND, Ms. Dao was surprised and did not dare to accept it. After being explained, Ms. Dao accepted the money, crying tears of joy. "I was treated and cared for well, and I also received money," Ms. Dao was emotional.
After 6 days in the hospital, Ms. Dao saved 150,000 VND on food. Ms. Dao said: "I have been hospitalized in many places before, this is the first time the hospital gave me money."
Poor patients are given daily food money at Binh Son District Medical Center.
Ms. Do Thi Ho (79 years old) is a poor, single, homeless person living in Dong Yen village, Binh Duong commune, Binh Son district. She has been receiving treatment at Binh Son District Medical Center for the past half month. Every day, she receives money from the center. Along with charity meals provided by pagodas, organizations, and individuals to support poor patients, Ms. Ho has saved quite a bit of money.
Talking to us, Mrs. Ho was so moved that she could not speak. Because she had never been treated in a hospital before, and she was treated for free, and even received money for meals from the hospital.
300 million VND/year
Doctor Vo Hung Vien, Director of Binh Son District Medical Center, said that the support of food money for poor inpatients here has been carried out for 1.5 months. "Many poor patients come here for treatment, but have no money for food. Every time the doctors and nurses hold a press conference, it is heartbreaking to hear," said Doctor Vien.

If there is a lack of food, treatment will be slower. Patients also ask to be discharged early… These are the concerns of the head of Binh Son District Medical Center and the medical team here. Doctor Vien said that to support money for poor patients, there must be resources.
So after reviewing, Dr. Vien held a meeting with the entire agency and proposed to support money for poor inpatients. Seeing the good deeds, the doctors and nurses agreed to support. Therefore, this source of support comes from profitable service activities, daily salary contributions of doctors and nurses, and other legal sources.
Poor patients buy rice with money from Binh Son District Medical Center, eat at the tables and chairs that are set up.
"According to calculations, each year, the unit has to spend about 300 million VND to support poor inpatients. This is considered the hospital's development 'roadmap', but it is also a meaningful act of a doctor," Dr. Vien shared.
According to Dr. Vien, not only patients in Binh Son district, but also from other districts of Quang Ngai province, even from outside the province, who come here for treatment, poor patients are also supported with the same amount of money. In addition, if a patient is a transient with special conditions, even if he/she does not have a poor household registration book, the hospital is still willing to treat him/her for free.
"We do these things for nothing more than love for the poor, contributing to a better and warmer life in our homeland," Dr. Vien shared.
