With an area of about 151,000 hectares, durian is grown in many provinces and cities in our country. This year, durian output is estimated at about 1.5 million tons.

This fruit of our country is harvested in different seasons, available all year round to serve domestic consumption and export needs. However, the peak harvest is from April to September every year. That is, this time has entered the main harvest season, so durian exports have increased sharply.

At Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. 2 (Lao Cai), the average amount of fresh fruit exported each day is about 100 trucks, of which more than 90 trucks are durian.

Currently, Monthong durian costs about 90,000 VND/kg, Ri6 durian costs about 60,000 VND/kg, meaning each export truck is worth 1.1-1.5 billion VND. Earlier this year, during the off-season, durian prices reached 200,000 VND/kg, with the export value of each truck reaching 3.5 billion VND.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said that durian exports are increasing very strongly. In May, the export turnover of this fruit reached 450 million USD, an increase of 107% compared to the previous month and 34% compared to the same period last year.

In June 2024, the amount of exported durian is estimated to reach 600 million USD. That is, in just 2 months, our country earned 1.05 billion USD from durian export activities.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the first 6 months of this year, durian export turnover reached 1.5 billion USD. Accordingly, durian continues to lead the turnover in the group of key fruit and vegetable exports of our country. Currently, durian turnover is nearly 4 times higher than dragon fruit - the fruit that used to hold the top position in the group of fruit and vegetable exports.

According to Mr. Nguyen, China is still increasing its purchases of Vietnamese durian. However, he warned that businesses need to be more careful about growing area codes as well as the quality of durian exported to this billion-people market.

The Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) also recommends that localities and businesses need to closely monitor growing area codes and packaging facility codes to avoid purchasing goods from unlicensed places, which affects the export activities of legitimate businesses.

According to calculations, with our country's durian output, this year the export of this fruit will reach 3 billion USD. If the protocol for exporting frozen durian is signed, the export turnover could reach about 3.5 billion USD.

Some gardeners in the West said that this year, durian productivity has decreased compared to last year, averaging only about 15 tons/ha. However, durian prices are quite high, ranging from 60,000-100,000 VND/kg. Therefore, farmers still make a profit of about 700 million VND to 1 billion VND/ha depending on productivity and selling price after deducting production costs.
