Skipping breakfast and health consequences

Việt NamViệt Nam03/04/2025

Staying up late, Vi Anh Nguyet, a student at Thai Nguyen University in Lao Cai province, is not used to waking up early. At nearly 7 a.m., the alarm clock rang and Nguyet started her day. Without having time to eat breakfast or even drink a sip of water, Nguyet hurriedly prepared her books and belongings for school. "I feel quite tired when I don't eat breakfast. Usually, I skip breakfast and eat it for lunch, which is more economical," Anh Nguyet shared.

Often waking up late due to staying up late, many students go to school without having time to eat breakfast.

Like Vi Anh Nguyet, since her student days, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngan Ha in Duyen Hai ward, Lao Cai city, often skipped breakfast and had problems related to stomach disease. Now, as a busy mother, she also does not have the habit of eating breakfast regularly. Every morning, she is busy taking care of her children, texting customers, and maintaining her online business. After finishing her work, it is often too late to eat breakfast and she has to skip this important meal.

Ms. Ha said: "There are unfinished tasks from the previous day that I need to do first in the morning before having breakfast. There are days when I finish early so I can have breakfast, but on days when I have a lot of work, I usually skip breakfast."

Because she is busy with work and has to look after her children, Ms. Ha often skips breakfast.

Skipping breakfast can cause many health problems such as: reducing concentration, affecting the digestive system and increasing the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In addition, skipping breakfast also makes the body tired, irritable and reduces work efficiency.

Dr. Giang Thi Hanh, Department of Internal Medicine, Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital added: "Not eating breakfast will greatly affect health, especially for children, the elderly, manual workers, office workers... For young children, not providing enough energy can lead to malnutrition, lack of concentration in school; the elderly are at risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases; for manual workers, not eating breakfast will not have enough energy to work, thereby reducing work efficiency".

Skipping breakfast regularly poses many health risks. No matter how busy you are, everyone should take the time to have a nutritious breakfast, because it is not only a way to start the day with lots of energy but also helps maintain a healthy body and a clear mind.
