(PLVN) - According to the Department of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), Vietnam's pangasius export turnover in 2024 could reach the target of 2 billion USD and continue to maintain positive prospects in 2025.
Pangasius fish export turnover reached nearly 1.67 billion USD
According to the report of the Department of Fisheries, Vietnam's pangasius industry will face many difficulties and challenges in 2024. Prices of goods and input materials for aquaculture development remain high, while logistics costs increase sharply.
In addition, increasingly fierce competition from a number of countries that are gaining market share in the Muslim market has put great pressure on the industry. Low raw pangasius purchasing prices have also negatively affected the production efficiency of breeding and commercial farming facilities, especially small-scale facilities.
However, thanks to the continuous efforts of businesses, along with active support from management agencies and associations, the Vietnamese pangasius industry has achieved remarkable achievements, improving both product quality and export value.
Mr. Tran Dinh Luan - Director of the Department of Fisheries said that the output of pangasius in 2024 is estimated to reach 1.67 million tons, equal to 99% compared to the same period in 2023. Pangasius export turnover up to the end of the first 10 months of 2024 reached nearly 1.67 billion USD, an increase of 9.3% over the same period in 2023.
According to Mr. Luan, the orientation of the Vietnamese pangasius industry in 2025 is to reach an output of 1.65 million tons and an export turnover of 2 billion USD. Proactively produce and supply over 70% of the demand for selected parent pangasius.
Pangasius output in the first 10 months of 2024 is estimated at 1.67 million tons, equal to 99% compared to the same period in 2023. |
To achieve this goal, according to Mr. Luan, it is necessary to focus on investing in and upgrading essential infrastructure to meet production requirements for more than 30 concentrated aquaculture areas and concentrated seed production areas. At the same time, it is necessary to build a chain linking production, processing and consumption to ensure stable output for at least 30% of aquaculture products.
In addition, he emphasized the encouragement of expanding farming areas according to international standards, in order to create high-quality products, ensure food safety and meet market demand. The application of advanced farming technologies, water saving, adaptation to climate change, and wastewater and sludge treatment technology to protect the environment are also encouraged towards sustainable development.
Expected to reach 2 billion USD in 2024, continue to maintain in 2025
Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Ms. To Thi Tuong Lan, forecasts that pangasius export turnover in 2024 could reach the target of 2 billion USD.
According to data from VASEP, China and Hong Kong (China) continued to be the largest consumer markets for Vietnamese pangasius in the first 10 months of 2024. In October 2024 alone, pangasius exports to this market reached 61 million USD, up 9% over the same period. However, the total export turnover of pangasius to China and Hong Kong (China) in 10 months still decreased by 2.3% over the same period last year, reaching only over 479 million USD.
Pangasius exports to the US in October 2024 recorded impressive growth, reaching more than 35 million USD, up 65% over the same period. Total pangasius exports to the US in the first 10 months of 2024 reached more than 291 million USD, up nearly 28% over the same period. The US is still a large potential market, especially thanks to programs such as "School Lunch" and "Food and Nutrition Support" of the US Government, which will last until the end of the first quarter of 2025.
In addition, the decline in the supply of cod from Russia and tilapia also creates conditions for Vietnamese pangasius to increase its market share.
The CPTPP market, with 11 member countries such as Japan, Australia, Canada, and Singapore, is the third largest consumer market for Vietnamese pangasius. In the first 10 months of 2024, pangasius exports to CPTPP countries reached more than 224 million USD, up nearly 11% over the same period. Meanwhile, pangasius exports to the EU increased slightly by 0.04%, reaching nearly 144 million USD. Some countries in the EU such as Lithuania, Ireland, Italy, and Spain recorded positive import growth with double digits.
Smaller markets such as Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Japan, and Colombia have also recorded impressive growth and are expected to continue to grow in the coming time. However, in the Chinese market, the Vietnamese pangasius industry will face many challenges, including competitive pressure from other countries and cautiousness from importers in the context of the Chinese economy not yet recovering.
Ms. To Thi Tuong Lan believes that the Vietnamese pangasius industry will continue to maintain a positive outlook in 2025, with a strong increase in the export of processed pangasius products. This will be the main driving force to help the Vietnamese pangasius industry overcome challenges and affirm its position in the international market.
