Attending the launching ceremony, on behalf of the University of Public Health, there were Associate Professor, Dr. Le Thi Thanh Huong - Vice Principal and the school's research team.
On the side of Tay Ho district, there was the participation of Ms. Bui Thi Lan Phuong - Vice Chairman of Tay Ho District People's Committee, leaders of the District Health Department, leaders of the District Health Center and representatives of 120 establishments (restaurants, eateries, cafes, hotels) in the district.
The launching ceremony was held to introduce to establishments the research plan for data collection from May to July 2025 and the commitment of establishments to participate in ensuring the implementation of smoke-free environmental policies at restaurants, eateries, cafes, and hotels in the district, towards a smoke-free city, protecting people's health and improving the quality of life.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Thi Thanh Huong - Vice Principal of the University of Public Health said that the study will collect data at 120 business establishments (restaurants, cafes, hotels) in Tay Ho district. The participating establishments are committed to strictly implementing the smoke-free policy, contributing to protecting public health and improving the quality of life.
Ms. Bui Thi Lan Phuong, Vice Chairwoman of Tay Ho District People's Committee emphasized: "The launching ceremony is an opportunity for businesses, schools, and hospitals to join hands in building a civilized and clean Tay Ho. A smoke-free environment not only protects health but also creates an image of a modern and friendly district."
The "Smoke-Free Cities" study was conducted by the School of Public Health in collaboration with the University of York (UK), the University of Melbourne (Australia) and local research groups. Funded by the UK's National Health and Medical Research Council (MRC) and the UK's National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the study aims to promote the implementation of smoke-free environmental policies in cities in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam.
The overall objective of the study is to work with city authorities, stakeholders and communities in two cities in each country (Bangladesh, Pakistan and Vietnam) to strengthen the implementation of smoke-free policies in public places, contributing to the protection of public health from secondhand smoke. In Vietnam, the study is expected to be implemented from August 2024 to July 2028 in Hanoi (Cau Giay and Tay Ho districts) and Vinh Yen city, Vinh Phuc province.
