This is the content that the provincial Department of Science and Technology organized a conference on the morning of September 14. Attending the conference were leaders of the Intellectual Property Office, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Chairman and members of the Executive Committee of the Binh Thuan Shrimp Association, leaders of the Institute of Aquaculture and organizations and individuals that are producing, raising and trading shrimp products in Binh Thuan.
At the conference, the representative of the Intellectual Property Office announced the Decision of the Minister of Science and Technology on approving the task of "Registering, protecting, managing and developing geographical indications for shrimp products of Binh Thuan". At the same time, the task was assigned to the Branch of Investip Industrial Property Joint Stock Company (Hanoi City) to preside over the implementation.
Speaking at the conference, Ms. Mai Thanh Nga - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology said that the shrimp seed production industry in Binh Thuan started in 1985 and up to now, the whole province has 148 enterprises and establishments with 730 shrimp seed production farms. The output of shrimp seed produced and consumed in 2020 reached 25.3 billion post larvae/148 establishments and accounted for 20% of the country's shrimp seed output. Shrimp seed production in Binh Thuan is currently mainly on two subjects: black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp.
Many breeding facilities in the province are large-scale, invested in modern equipment, advanced technical processes, meeting international quality standards in shrimp breeding. Currently, there are enterprises that have succeeded in researching and producing their own source of parent shrimp, with traceable origins, breeds with high survival rates, good resistance and adaptability to local soil conditions, no longer dependent on imported sources such as the US, Thailand, Singapore, etc. Therefore, self-sufficiency in parent shrimp further affirms the advantage of shrimp breeding production of Binh Thuan province in the South Central region and the whole country.
Binh Thuan shrimp seed has also been identified as an advantageous product serving the strategic goal of developing Vietnam's shrimp industry until 2025 according to Decision No. 79 dated January 18, 2018 of the Prime Minister. Protection in the form of "geographical indication" will create a premise for better management of Binh Thuan shrimp product quality. At the same time, it will create opportunities for organizations and individuals raising and trading shrimp in the province to benefit more from the brand value of Binh Thuan shrimp.
At the conference, the project implementing unit reported on the progress of the task, discussed and agreed on a number of contents, plans and coordination work to improve the effectiveness of the task organization and implementation. In addition, professional staff of the Department of Intellectual Property, the Institute of Aquaculture together with departments, branches, and the Binh Thuan Shrimp Association focused on discussing and proposing solutions to effectively implement the task of geographical indication of Binh Thuan shrimp. Thereby, in order to enhance the value, protect and develop the reputation of the product as well as the reputation of the locality in the market, contributing to improving the lives of people and promoting the socio-economic development of Binh Thuan province.
