The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the continental arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), has warned that the Americas could face the worst dengue outbreak in history after recording a surge in cases of the deadly disease in the first quarter of 2024.
According to the latest statistics, the number of dengue fever infections in the Americas region in the first 3 months of 2024 reached 3.5 million cases, including 1,000 deaths, 300% higher than the same period in 2023.
Brazil has the most cases, at more than 50%, followed by its two South American neighbors, Argentina and Paraguay. Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay and Peru are considered high-risk countries. In February, Brazil became the first country in the world to introduce a dengue vaccine into its national immunization program, while several other countries in the region are now planning to do the same.
