New rural model garden

The construction of model gardens not only contributes to the new rural construction movement but also helps people increase their income, "painting" a bright picture in many rural areas of Ha Tinh.

New rural model garden - don't stop at the model!

Model gardens contribute to brightening the picture of many rural areas.

Increase income, build more livable countryside

I was fortunate to “witness” many model gardens in Ha Tinh province. Each new rural area has clean concrete roads, green fences on both sides with neatly trimmed trees, and family gardens are arranged in rows, beds, and areas... The movement to build model gardens from the initial bright spots has penetrated deeply into many rural areas in the province.

When starting to build the new rural area, in many localities, shady trees were cut down to make way for concrete fences. Realizing this shortcoming early, the Ha Tinh New Rural Area Coordination Office created a new way of doing things, building the 20th criterion - model new rural residential areas and model gardens.

Ha Tinh is a “fire pan, rain pocket” region, and is heavily affected by climate change. From the difficulties, Ha Tinh people have to make great efforts to develop the economy. The 20th criterion is to improve the material and spiritual life of the people. Starting from each family to model gardens and model residential areas, all are associated with a green - clean - beautiful environment.

“If the model garden criteria are not implemented with high concentration in direction and initial support mechanisms and policies, the “golden inches” in Ha Tinh will forever sleep in gardens overgrown with weeds. Awakening the gardening mindset to create a stable source of income and beautify the appearance of the new rural residential area is a creative step in the new rural construction movement in Ha Tinh” - Mr. Tran Huy Toan, officer in charge of criterion 20 - Ha Tinh New Rural Coordination Office said.

Building model gardens creates a stable source of income for people.

Although he is 74 years old this year, Mr. Dinh Van Dy and his wife (Ha Thanh village, Tuong Son commune, Thach Ha) are still enthusiastically leading the movement to build model gardens. In 2014, his family was one of the first households in the village to renovate their mixed garden and build a model garden. On the garden of more than 2,000m2 , he grows fruit trees such as Taiwanese guava, longan, and sapodilla; the remaining area is used to grow vegetables and dig a 200m2 pond to raise carp.

Mr. Dy always works hard to learn knowledge, experiment with new varieties, and ensure food hygiene and safety in production. Vegetables are grown in the off-season and in the season to increase income. He and his wife are always willing to share good practices in caring for crops and livestock with people, especially experiences in preventing pests on squash, squash, and cucumber without using pesticides. Thanks to diligence and reasonable calculations in organizing production, his family has an income of 50 - 80 million VND/year.

Chairman of Tuong Son Commune People's Committee Duong Kim Huy said: "Up to now, the whole commune has 80 model gardens, with an average income of 80-100 million VND/year. In addition to creating a stable source of income for people, the construction of model gardens also creates a spillover effect in the development of household garden economy, people boldly invest, bring new scientific and technological advances into production. Model gardens also ensure environmental landscape, bring high aesthetics, create the image of a prosperous new rural countryside".

To not stop at the model

Coming to Ha Tinh today, the fresh, prosperous and happy rural appearance is present in every house and every face of the people. In rural areas, houses are tiled and solidified; rural roads are concreted and asphalted synchronously; the infrastructure system of electricity - roads - schools - stations - irrigation - village cultural houses is spacious and modern; gardens are not only beautiful but also economically effective.

Building model gardens has created green, clean, and beautiful household spaces in many rural areas.

The poverty rate in the whole province is only 3.79% (nearly 10 times lower than in 2001); the average income per capita is 46.3 million VND/year. The number of rich and well-off households is increasing rapidly. In many places, new tiled houses and high-rise buildings are built close together; at night, electric lights shine, exuding the modern look of "streets in the village".

According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Tinh, Chairman of the Ha Tinh Gardening and Farming Association: “As the first province to effectively implement the model gardening movement in the construction of new rural areas, Ha Tinh has had many good and creative ways. In particular, the construction of VAC model gardens in the direction of organic agriculture has created green, clean and beautiful household spaces, forming people's habits in producing goods with high economic value. The construction of model gardens has brought about clear results, contributing to the transformation from self-sufficient gardens to business gardens; from simple farmers to farmers approaching commodity production, creating a spreading effect to increase people's income and landscape for the countryside".

Garden economy contributes to improving people's lives.

It is undeniable that the standard gardens and new rural model gardens in Ha Tinh have created a new look for rural areas. However, because the main subject of the model garden building movement is farmers, the main goal and hard criteria in the new rural model gardens "first and foremost" is still to increase income from garden economic development.

Therefore, to exploit the potential and advantages, create a large volume of goods from the garden economy, all levels, sectors and localities need to continue to pay attention to the development of the garden economy to increase income for the community; select key plants and animals suitable for the locality; establish cooperatives and cooperatives to help each other develop production and strengthen solidarity in the community.

If we want to expand and spread, we must first build gardens that are popular in terms of scale, area, investment costs, income... so that many farmers can learn and build... Besides, we need to promote the application of science and technology, produce organic fertilizer from agricultural waste, household waste, environmental sanitation; increase joint ventures and partnerships with businesses to consume products.
