Western coal region ensures environmental requirements

The Western coal region of Quang Ninh province is home to many coal production, processing, consumption and trading units of the Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group (TKV). Among them, many units have production sites and industrial premises adjacent to residential areas, which have more or less affected the ecological environment in the area.   With the policy of linking production with environmental protection, TKV has directed units to increase investment and upgrade modern technological lines, both to improve productivity and to minimize environmental impact.

In order to limit dust emission during the production process, Mao Khe Coal Company has actively innovated mining technology. The most important breakthrough of the unit in technological innovation, increasing productivity and being environmentally friendly is proactively applying hydraulic support technology instead of wooden support, contributing to reducing losses and increasing mining output. In the dust suppression stage, in addition to maintaining traditional forms, Mao Khe Coal has invested in many new, high-capacity mist spraying and dust suppression equipment to meet the requirements of large-scale production.

High pressure mist sprayers are used to suppress dust at screening house 56, Mao Khe Coal Company - TKV.

Coal dust treatment is implemented by the unit at all production locations, from the furnace to the industrial area. Based on determining the largest amount of dust emitted in the screening area 56 with continuously operating excavating equipment and conveyor systems, along with about 200 trucks carrying coal in and out each day, Mao Khe Coal has focused on investing in and operating high-pressure mist spraying equipment here.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, Head of the Company's Investment - Environment Department, since 2019, Mao Khe Coal has put into use 8 high-pressure fan-type dust suppression misting systems, assigned to the Coal Screening Workshop for management and operation. This unit has coordinated with specialized departments to identify key dust locations to install fan towers at appropriate heights. In addition to the dust source generated from production activities in screening house 56, for the transportation route through this screening house area, Mao Khe Coal has installed a pumping system and 140 dust suppression nozzles along the route from Cua Lo -25 to the outside of guard station No. 6. For the remaining routes, the Company uses 4 Stec vehicles with tank capacity from 10÷15m3 to spray and wash the routes 3 shifts/day with an average frequency of 8 trips/vehicle/shift, depending on the humidity of the air to ensure that the routes are free of dust.

To handle coal dust generated during transportation, TKV is also moving towards conveyorization of all coal transportation activities at the Group's coal mining, screening, processing and consumption units. TKV's longest coal conveyor line has just been completed by the Environment One Member Co., Ltd. and is conducting test runs and equipment calibration. "This conveyor line will be responsible for transporting coal at the industrial yard +24 of Trang Bach mine, pouring it into bunkers to receive coal for Mao Khe Thermal Power Plant and transporting it to Ben Can port; ending coal transportation by car, ensuring environmental quality for this area" - said Mr. Vu Duc Minh, Head of the Mechanical - Electrical - Transportation Department of Environment One Member Co., Ltd.

TKV's longest coal conveyor line is responsible for transporting coal from +24 Trang Bach (Uong Bi Coal Company) to 56 Mao Khe.

Coal production and trading units in the Western region are a rich and high-quality coal granary, playing an important role in the economic structure of the Group. However, not trading the environment for economic benefits, TKV leaders are increasingly "stricter" with units in carrying out urgent and long-term environmental tasks.

Since the beginning of the year, the Chairman of the Board of Members of TKV and the executive leaders have regularly conducted surprise inspections of the compliance with environmental protection regulations at units in the Western region. During the inspection process, the Group's leaders pointed out some typical limitations of some units in the management of coal storage warehouses, cleaning of specialized coal transportation roads, operation of dust suppression misting equipment, etc.; at the same time, they requested the units to correct them immediately in the shortest time.

Implementing the Group's direction, the units have seriously re-evaluated the production process, regulations on management of environmental tasks and works and equipment serving environmental sanitation to the current coal production, processing and consumption units. Previous shortcomings have been significantly improved.

Mr. Ngo Hoang Ngan, Chairman of the Board of Directors - TKV (second from right) inspected environmental work at Da Bac Logistics Company - TKV.

For example, at Da Bac Logistics Company - which is operating the coal blending and consumption system in the Western region for the Group, most of the industrial yard area in Dien Cong port area has been upgraded, and drainage systems have also been invested synchronously. Along the roads inside and outside the management boundary, the unit has planted additional trees, helping to improve air quality and prevent dust quite effectively in this area. Or at Vang Danh Coal Joint Stock Company, green areas are increasingly covering the mine site. On the roads leading to the mine such as Lan Thap - Vang Danh, the Company arranges water spraying trucks to suppress dust and assigns workers to sweep regularly, ensuring that the environment of the residential area adjacent to the mine is always clean, minimizing the spread of coal dust.

The parallel between production and environment is a long-term direction that helps Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Group maintain sustainable development. The core issue to achieve this dual goal is to invest in upgrading mining technology infrastructure. Synchronizing with modern, integrated production lines are environmental protection projects and projects. Ensuring harmony between these solutions, TKV and coal production and trading units in the Western region have basically met the requirements for environmental protection. This is also the orientation of Quang Ninh province in developing industries in the area, contributing to the socio-economic development goals of the locality in the coming period.
