(CLO) Britain's King Charles and Queen Camilla met with people in Sydney after attending a church service on Sunday, an event marking their first royal visit to Australia.

Inside the cathedral, King Charles and Queen Camilla signed two Bibles, the first time the public had a chance to meet Charles and Camilla since they arrived in Australia's largest city on Friday night.

Later, while passing through Sydney Harbour, King Charles visited the New South Wales state parliament to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Australia's oldest legislature.

“It is a great joy to visit Australia for the first time as King and to renew my love for this country and its people, a love that I have long cherished,” King Charles said.

It is also Charles's first international tour as King, and his first major trip since he was diagnosed with cancer.

King Charles has made a significant personal donation to create a skills training program to tackle climate change and improve higher education in small island states, including those in the Pacific, the Association of Commonwealth Universities announced on Sunday.

The programme will benefit mid-career professionals and civil servants, with the aim of retaining talent in small island states and improving their ability to respond to climate change impacts such as rising sea levels.
