As of January 2025, teacher Ho Thi Hong Gam and her husband (Vinh Phuc) were the owners of more than 100 'red books' and this number is still increasing.

More than 10 years and nearly 120 'red books'

Sharing with reporters of Cong Thuong Newspaper on the first days of the new year 2025, teacher Ho Thi Hong Gam - a secondary school teacher in Vinh Phuc province happily said that up to this point, the couple (Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam and Mr. Nguyen Van Hien) have owned nearly 120 'red books', of which her husband - Mr. Nguyen Van Hien owns 60 and she owns 58.

However, the 'red book' here is not a land use right certificate as many people think, but it is nearly 120 certificates for nearly 120 times the couple participated in voluntary blood donation.

Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam said that she and her husband started donating blood voluntarily in 2014 and have been doing so regularly until now, this activity has lasted for more than 10 years.

It is known that the initial reason for Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam's voluntary blood donation came from sympathy and sharing with patients who need blood to save their lives. And she felt happy when her drops of blood were given to those who really needed it. As the medical profession says, 'a drop given, a life saved'.

'Participating in voluntary blood donation, I feel my self-worth is raised and my life is much better because I have done meaningful things' - Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam shared more.

That is also the reason why, after a period of participating in voluntary blood donation activities, she persuaded her husband, Mr. Nguyen Van Hien - Technical Director of a business operating in the field of interior design in Vinh Phuc province to join her. Just like Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam, after many times of participating in voluntary blood donation, Mr. Nguyen Van Hien is also 'addicted' and has been involved in this activity for more than 10 years. Up to now, his 'red book' of voluntary blood donation has 'surpassed' that of his wife, up to 60 times.

In particular, according to Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam, from being "lured", Mr. Nguyen Van Hien has now become the "host" in voluntary blood donation activities. He often reminds her of the regular blood donation registration schedule because he is afraid that she will forget because of too much work.

More interestingly, Mr. Hien and Ms. Gam's first son, Nguyen Hoai Anh, a first-year student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, also donated blood for the first time when he turned 18. Thanks to that, the 'red book' of Mr. Hien and Ms. Gam's family has increased to 119 as of January 2025.

Sharing with reporters, Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam said: 'That is a huge 'asset' that the family has after a long time participating in voluntary blood donation activities. Looking at that 'asset', my husband and I still joke with each other that we are very rich'.

Continue with the voluntary blood donation movement

According to Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam, participating in the voluntary blood donation movement, besides the joy of supporting patients in critical situations, bringing joy and happiness to families because of saving the lives of their loved ones, there is also a greater joy that Ms. Gam and Mr. Hien have received over the years, which is that through blood donation campaigns, they have continuously received attention and advice from doctors at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion on health issues.

Through blood indicators, blood donors will be advised by doctors to adjust their diet and exercise accordingly. From that advice, Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam's husband was able to limit alcohol and spend more time exercising, adjusting his diet and sleep to protect his health. Notably, in the past 3 years, in addition to participating in the blood donation movement, Mr. Nguyen Van Hien has also participated in running races to improve his health and improve blood quality with the desire to be able to support patients when needed.

With the practical benefits and meanings, Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam believes that voluntary blood donation activities will continue to be responded to by her husband, her husband and her son in the coming years. And most recently, on January 5, 2025 at the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, they also registered to donate blood. Because supporting patients in need of blood is the way they contribute to the community and spread love for people.

On the occasion of the New Year 2025, Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam also expressed her wish through Cong Thuong Newspaper that more and more people, especially young people, will participate in voluntary blood donation activities. Because this activity, in addition to bringing faith, hope, and life opportunities to patients in difficulty, is also a way for blood donors to monitor and take care of their own health and that of their families.

As for patients undergoing treatment, Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam hopes that they will remain optimistic and trust the doctors, which is the most essential factor to help them overcome the disease. Because in the most difficult times regarding blood supply, for example during holidays and Tet, there are still many people like Mr. Hien and Ms. Gam who do not mind the night, willing to travel long distances to the hospital to give blood when requested by the doctors.

Sharing her and her family's wishes for the new year 2025, Ms. Ho Thi Hong Gam said: 'I just hope to have good health to continue to participate in voluntary blood donation and increase the total number of 'red books' of the family in the coming time'.

According to the Ministry of Health, after nearly 31 years of launching the humanitarian blood donation movement (January 24, 1994 - January 24, 2025), by 2024, the whole country had more than 21.3 million people donating blood, tens of thousands of individuals voluntarily donating blood more than 30 times, 50 times, even some people donated blood and platelets nearly 170 times. Thousands of families have members donating blood and participating in the voluntary blood donation movement; many agencies, schools, businesses and localities regularly organize blood donation days.
