Khe Sanh (Huong Hoa) is a red basalt land with a tradition of growing coffee since the 19th century. Khe Sanh Arabica coffee is one of the eight key coffee regions of Vietnam, currently there are more than 8,000 households cultivating coffee with an area of about 3,700 hectares, mainly concentrated in two communes Huong Phung and Huong Tan. After many years of experimenting with the Arabica bourbon and liberica (jackfruit coffee) varieties, the Catimor coffee variety of the Arabica line has now become the key coffee variety, creating the brand of Arabica Khe Sanh.

Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Huong Hoa District, Hoang Dinh Binh, said that in order to build the strength of the main crop in the area, help coffee farmers increase their income, improve their lives, and affirm the Khe Sanh Arabica coffee brand, the district has assessed the current situation and selected the existing raw material areas in the locality to have appropriate recovery and regeneration solutions. The district's strategy is to improve the quality of Khe Sanh Arabica coffee products to the national level, aiming at the export market.
Accordingly, the district has zoned off specialty coffee production on a concentrated scale, applying high technology. To effectively and sustainably implement the specialty coffee production strategy, the district has planned key coffee production areas. There are policies to support the development of planned specialty coffee raw material areas and build a traceability system for raw material areas. Investment in machinery and supporting items, training in specialized coffee processing to serve the processing of specialty coffee.
At the same time, promote activities, promote trade, develop specialty coffee brands inside and outside the province. In particular, traditional cultivation areas with good productivity and coffee quality such as Huong Phung, Huong Tan... are utilized to develop into high-quality coffee production areas.
Introduce new coffee varieties with good quality for farmers to replant coffee areas. Along with that, the district organizes training, technology transfer, opens professional training courses for managers, businesses, and people directly producing coffee. Support specialty coffee producers in building infrastructure, evaluating product quality, and finding consumption markets.

In recent years, coffee growers in Huong Hoa district have aimed to produce specialty coffee, focusing on improving quality and gradually building the Khe Sanh Arabica coffee brand. Currently, farmers, processing units and purchasing enterprises have joined together to produce the best quality coffee beans.
To promote the process of improving the quality of Vietnamese coffee and bringing Vietnamese coffee to the world, in 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development launched the project to develop Vietnamese specialty coffee in the period of 2021-2030, implemented in 8 provinces of Vietnam, including Quang Tri. In the period of 2021-2025, the coffee growing area will reach 11,500 hectares, accounting for 2% of the total coffee area nationwide; in the period of 2026-2030, the coffee growing area will reach 19,000 hectares, accounting for 3% of the total coffee area nationwide. |
Accompanying farmers in the production and processing of clean coffee, Khe Sanh Agricultural Products Cooperative and Pun Coffee Company Limited have cooperated to support organic coffee production, implemented the model of bringing forests to gardens, developed coffee raw material areas according to the criteria of combined agriculture and forestry, created biodiversity from gardens and forests and diversified livelihoods for farmers.
Pun Coffee is a business that not only grows coffee but also has a policy of linking and building a quality coffee model from the farm including cultivation. Intercropping shade trees, forestry trees, weed management, using microbial fertilizers from agricultural waste and limiting the use of chemicals. In case the coffee tree develops a disease, the preparations to prevent diseases on the coffee tree are all tested and have full traceability information.

Currently, after many years of declining acreage due to crop failure, the growing areas in Khe Sanh are gradually being reinvested and replanted, thanks to the efforts of Pun Coffee and a group of processing units for many years, contributing to honoring Khe Sanh Arabica coffee on the map of Vietnamese specialty coffee.
In which, Khe Sanh Arabica coffee produced by Pun Coffee won the first prize at the Vietnam Specialty Coffee competition organized by Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association and then in 2021, 2023, 2024, Khe Sanh Arabica coffee produced by Pun Coffee was consecutively ranked top 1 Vietnamese specialty coffee.
Currently, the Khe Sanh Arabica coffee brand that Pun Coffee is developing and processing has affirmed its position on the map of Vietnamese and global specialty coffee. Because this is a product that not only brings quality coffee beans but also has a sustainable impact on the environment, creates social security for people, especially ethnic minorities and makes Khe Sanh worthy of the title of a unique coffee region in Vietnam.
