According to data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in October 2023, the US imported 76,369 tons of shrimp, up 9% over the same period in 2022, marking 4 consecutive months of shrimp import growth after 13 months of decline.

However, the import value only reached 609.7 million USD, 4% lower than October 2022. The reason is that shrimp prices decreased to 7.98 USD/kg, 12% lower than the same period last year (9.08 USD/kg).
In the first 10 months of 2023, the United States imported 651,907 tons of shrimp, worth 5.4 billion USD, down 9% in volume and 20% in value compared to the same period last year (715,638 tons and 6.7 billion USD).
India remained the dominant source of US shrimp in October 2023, with 29,860 tonnes of shrimp exported worth $225.8 million, up 9% in volume and down 5% in value year-on-year. The average price fell 13% to $7.56/kg.
Accordingly, India holds 39% of the shrimp market share in the United States. In the first 10 months of the year, India exported 245,165 tons of shrimp to the United States, worth 1.9 billion USD, down 5% in volume and 19% in value compared to the same period last year.
Ecuador holds 24% of the shrimp market share, ranking second in the Top shrimp suppliers of the United States.
Indonesia remained the third largest source of shrimp to the United States with 13,009 metric tons of shrimp exported worth $99.5 million in October 2023; up 1% in volume and down 15% in value year-over-year.
The average price reached 7.65 USD/kg, 15% lower than the price of 9.00 USD/kg in October 2022. In the first 10 months of the year, Indonesia exported 120,077 tons of shrimp to the US, bringing in 971.9 million USD, down 15% in volume and 28% in value compared to the same period last year.
In October 2023, Vietnam remained the fourth largest source of shrimp for the United States, with 6,755 tons cleared, worth 71.3 million USD, up 30% in volume and 17% in value over the same period last year.
The average export price reached 10.57 USD/kg, down 10%. In the first 10 months of the year, the US imported 50,635 tons of Vietnamese shrimp, worth 541.2 million USD, down 17% in volume and 24% in value compared to the same period last year.
The recent shrimp import trend in the US market has been somewhat affected when the US Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC) investigated four US shrimp sources (India, Ecuador, Indonesia, Vietnam) for allegations related to anti-dumping taxes and/or illegal subsidies.
