On March 30, Mr. Ngo Thai Chan - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Soc Trang province - said that in addition to the spearhead of white-leg shrimp and tiger shrimp, Soc Trang is currently promoting the development of a monosex tilapia farming model for export.
Mr. Chan informed that Soc Trang has a brackish water shrimp farming area of about 50,000 hectares, mainly following the industrial model, contributing to the supply of raw materials for export processing factories in the locality and region.
In 2024, Soc Trang's shrimp exports will reach over 1 billion USD. The shrimp export situation in 2025 continues to be positive. In the first two months of 2025 alone, Soc Trang's shrimp exports reached about 143 million USD, an increase of over 17% over the same period.
"The coastal area of Soc Trang has great potential to develop a monosex tilapia farming model. Through testing, farmers have been very successful. Compared to shrimp farming, tilapia farming is less risky and investment costs are also lower.
Not only focusing on developing farming areas, a positive sign is that there are pioneering enterprises building processing factories. This not only contributes to consuming raw materials, diversifying livestock, serving exports but also creating jobs for many local workers," said Mr. Chan.
Mr. Do Ngoc Tai - General Director of Tai Kim Anh Company Limited - said that the construction of a tilapia processing factory in An Nghiep Industrial Park (Chau Thanh District, Soc Trang Province) has begun. The factory is expected to be operational in July 2025, with a processing capacity of 200 tons/day, including items such as tilapia fillets, whole fish and many value-added products.
In addition to Tai Kim Anh Company Limited, a number of other businesses in the West that are raising shrimp and processing shrimp for export are also interested in the monosex tilapia farming model.
Mr. Vo Van Phuc - General Director of Vietnam Clean Seafood Joint Stock Company - said that in addition to successfully raising shrimp using high technology, we are investing in raising monosex tilapia.
According to Mr. Phuc, the meat of monosex tilapia raised in coastal areas is both fragrant and sweet. "After the fillets were processed into valuable products, foreign customers tried them and praised the deliciousness and were very satisfied. We will expand the farming area to serve export, both proactively providing raw materials and serving the purpose of traceability," said Mr. Phuc.
