According to a VNA reporter in Geneva, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on September 26 held a ceremony to announce the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024 report.
Speaking online at the event, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh assessed that innovation is an objective requirement, a strategic choice and a top priority for countries in the process of rapid and sustainable development, leaving no one behind.
According to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Vietnam encourages innovation for the purpose of peace, cooperation and development in the world as well as in the region, and opposes innovation for the purpose of war, unfair competition and especially when it affects the lives of people around the world. Therefore, Vietnam also has a very clear view that in this innovation process, people must be the center and the subject, and people must truly enjoy the fruits of innovation.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized: “We need to share with each other: innovation affects all people, comprehensively and globally, affecting socio-economic development, so we must have a global approach, a people-wide approach, promoting multilateralism, calling for international cooperation in the process of promoting innovation. I call on rich countries, developed countries, advanced countries, countries with better conditions to support, help, and create conditions for developing countries, poor countries, and countries with more difficult conditions in terms of institution building, financial incentives, training of high-quality human resources, transfer of advanced technology and smart governance. Vietnam identifies education, training, science and technology as the top national policy, in which innovation is both the driving force, the resource, and the goal of development and contributes to the cause of building and defending the country, contributing to promoting the building of a strong and prosperous Vietnam, and the Vietnamese people are increasingly happy and prosperous. Therefore, we are very grateful, respectful and appreciative of the assistance of international organizations, including WIPO, as well as scientists and experts who have come to cooperate and help us in the process of promoting innovation to serve the country's rapid and sustainable development."
For his part, WIPO Director General Darren Tang also congratulated Vietnam on its recent socio-economic achievements, and appreciated the attention of the Party and State of Vietnam to science and technology, innovation and intellectual property. Specifically, in the Global Innovation Index (GII) Report 2024, Vietnam rose 2 places compared to the previous year, to 44/132 countries. According to the WIPO report, Switzerland, Sweden, the US, Singapore and the UK have the most innovative economies in the world, while China, Türkiye, India, Vietnam and the Philippines are the countries with the fastest "10-year climb".
WIPO also assessed that technology continues to develop rapidly, especially in areas related to health and computing power. Technology adoption is also increasing, especially in fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks, with coverage expected to increase by nearly 25% by 2022, robotics and electric vehicles (EVs). However, progress in green technologies last year was slower than the decade average, highlighting many difficulties.
Also at the event announcing the Global Innovation Index 2024 report, sharing with VNA reporters, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung - Head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international organizations in Geneva, said: "The attendance and speech of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh once again affirmed the importance of innovation for Vietnam's sustainable socio-economic development.
On the part of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam in Geneva, we always strive to play the role of a bridge to promote cooperation between Vietnam and WIPO, as well as with international partners. In particular, Switzerland is the country that has been at the top of the world in the GII Index for more than ten consecutive years and is also the headquarters of WIPO, providing many valuable lessons on innovation models. We see that there is still a lot of room to research and learn from the Swiss model in particular and Europe in general.
This will help us not only improve but also refine Vietnam's innovation model to be more suitable and effective in promoting sustainable socio-economic development. I believe that through events like the GII 2024 Announcement, we will have more opportunities to meet, exchange and work with partners, thereby actively contributing to the building and development of Vietnam's innovation policy, contributing to enhancing the country's position in the international arena."
