Exciting Semi-Finals
The first semi-final match of the AFF Cup 2024 is the match between Vietnam and Singapore. At the end of the group stage, the Vietnam team had quite impressive form, undefeated after 4 matches (3 wins, 1 draw) to lead Group B with 10 points. Meanwhile, the Singapore team struggled, with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. The team of the "Lion Island" has 7 points, ranked 2nd in Group B.
The Vietnamese team is expected to continue to play well and reach the finals.
The first leg of the semi-final between the two teams will take place at 8:00 p.m. on December 26, 2024, at Singapore's Jalan Besar Stadium. Notably, this is the second time at the AFF Cup 2024 that the Vietnamese team has had to play away on an artificial pitch. In the third round of the group stage, when drawing 1-1 with the Philippines (December 18), the Vietnamese team also faced many difficulties because they played on the artificial pitch of Rizal Memorial.
At 8:00 p.m. on December 29, 2024, the Vietnamese team will meet Singapore in the second leg. This match will take place at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho). The Vietnamese team won both group stage matches here (beating Indonesia 1-0 and Myanmar 5-0). Therefore, Vietnamese fans are hoping that coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will continue to have favorable results to win the final against Singapore and advance to the final match.
AFF Cup 2024 semi-final schedule
Meanwhile, the second semi-final of the AFF Cup 2024 is the clash between Thailand and the Philippines. Despite missing many key players in this year's tournament, Thailand still showed formidable strength in the group stage, winning all 4 matches to top Group A with 12 points. More notably, coach Masatada Ishii and his team scored 18 goals (the most in the tournament) and only conceded 4 goals. On the other side, thanks to a surprising 1-0 victory on Indonesia's field, Singapore only had 6 points, ranking 2nd in Group B.
At 8:00 p.m. on December 27, the first leg of the semi-final between Thailand and the Philippines will take place at Rizal Memorial Stadium. In the last 4 times visiting here, the Thai team has encountered difficulties and only returned with a victory once: Thailand beat the Philippines 2-1 in the 4th round, group stage of the AFF Cup 2020 (December 2021).
At 8pm on December 30, the Thai team will return to Rajamangala Stadium to play the second leg against the Philippines. This is considered a huge challenge for the Philippines as Thailand has always played well at home, remaining unbeaten in the last 4 matches.
Thailand team is still the number 1 candidate for the championship title.
Commenting on the two semi-final matches of the AFF Cup 2024, international sports site ESPN wrote: “In terms of history of confrontation as well as the balance of power, the Thai and Vietnamese teams are completely superior to their opponents. Therefore, it will not be surprising if both teams dominate in their semi-final matches to win convincingly and enter the final.”
