Vietnam is among the top in Asia for infrastructure investment.

On April 18, within the framework of “Sustainability Week”, the UN General Assembly held a High-level Debate on Promoting Sustainable Development through Infrastructure Connectivity.

Attending the Discussion Session were President of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis, President of Poland Andrzej Duda and representatives of UN member countries.

A VNA correspondent in New York quoted UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis as highlighting the importance of an infrastructure development strategy in achieving all sustainable development goals, while emphasizing the need to increase financial support and investment in quality, reliable and sustainable infrastructure.

Countries participating in the Discussion Session also shared experiences, good practices and challenges to narrow the gap in infrastructure development and connectivity, as well as promote partnership, solidarity and innovation for sustainable infrastructure development.

Speaking at the Discussion Session, Ambassador, Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the UN Dang Hoang Giang affirmed that promoting connectivity between and within countries is necessary for economic development, job creation, ensuring supply chain efficiency and enhancing sustainability.

To promote infrastructure connectivity, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang proposed the need to strengthen international cooperation and solidarity, through financial and technical support to narrow the gap in infrastructure development, especially with developing countries.

Countries need to strengthen the resilience of their infrastructure systems through investment in renewable energy, green transport technologies and digital infrastructure, with institutional and financial contributions from both the public and private sectors.

At the same time, global efforts on infrastructure connectivity need to be linked to regional and national initiatives, with the ASEAN Connectivity Master Plan 2025 as a prime example, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and support throughout the lifecycle of infrastructure projects in the region.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang emphasized that building a modern and synchronous infrastructure system is one of the three strategic breakthroughs of the Vietnamese Government for sustainable development.

Vietnam is one of Asia's leading countries in infrastructure investment, spending 5.7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on projects in this field.

To date, Vietnam has put into operation 1,729 km of expressways and strives to reach 3,000 km by 2025. At the same time, Vietnam continues to develop infrastructure connections with neighboring countries, including Laos, thereby promoting regional and inter-regional connectivity.

The Vietnamese Government continues to prioritize the development of sustainable infrastructure through investment in renewable energy, green transport systems, and encouraging the production and use of electric public transport.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang also expressed his gratitude to official development assistance (ODA) partners for their timely and effective support for Vietnam's infrastructure development projects.

This year's "Sustainability Week", taking place from April 15-19, is an initiative of the President of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly to organize a series of High-level Sessions of the UN General Assembly to discuss topics related to sustainable development in order to attract the participation of high-level leaders of countries, contributing to mobilizing political will to promote the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
