A meal with enough meat and vegetables for Lang Nu students after days of flood and food shortage - Photo: VU TUAN
"Children in Lang Nu have hot rice, fresh meat, and green vegetables", photos of warm meals at a boarding house in Bao Yen, Lao Cai warm the hearts of all those who are concerned about the post-flood situation in the North at this time and those who are contributing and sharing everywhere, in every region.
When the danger has passed, when food is no longer urgent in the flood-hit areas, in the midst of the overwhelming reconstruction work, the focus now is on something extremely necessary: taking care of the education of the students.
Re-purchase the necessary items for a school bag that is dear to the shoulders of students, re-equip a warm school that is fully equipped to nurture the future, and support livelihoods so that no child is forced to leave school.
So simple, yet so necessary, so much care, so much love, so much lasting resources, like the lyrics of a song: "Tables, chairs, books, notebooks/ Ink, pens, chalk, blackboards/ The joyful sounds of birds on high tree branches/ The starry flag in the golden autumn light/ How I love our school...".
For many years now, students - teachers - schools have always been at the forefront of concerns, at the forefront of social programs that Tuoi Tre has chosen as a mission parallel to its journalistic mission. And the program to rebuild schools after Typhoon Yagi was born from that practical concern.
On the way of working, the children we met were all living in difficult circumstances - sometimes harsh, all had just experienced a disaster - sometimes catastrophic - like the flood that just swept through Lang Nu, but the vitality of childhood was incomparable.
Very soon, the sparkle will return to your eyes, to your smiling lips. Very soon, your steps will be joyful again, your souls will be open again...
We have witnessed it many times, and therefore, the school must quickly become warm to welcome that carefree step, the schoolbags must quickly be full enough to wait for that hand, the lessons must quickly be opened, written, and taught to meet that soul.
We cannot let it be broken. We cannot let the flood that has caused loss of life and ruined the future - even if it is just one student who has to drop out of school.
Very quickly, books, pens, rulers, backpacks, uniforms, shoes... were given to the children. The joy of receiving gifts may not have dispelled all the shock after the storm and flood, but it was truly a joy.
And this joy will certainly bring with it many other joys, many other hopes on each day that schools reopen, the children turn their books, and pick up pens and rulers again.
Having gone through storms and floods, witnessed devastation, and overcome loss, each child has grown up to know how fragile and precious life is, to know that they will have to learn - to live with the absence of their friend at the next table because of the flood, to know that they have to learn how to protect their own family - house - school - village.
Many teachers, students from kindergarten, primary - secondary - high school, and university students have come to Tuoi Tre editorial office in recent days.
Not only money, but also the youthful, vibrant energy of love and hope is gathered into sharing, sent and delivered to areas affected by storms and floods, so that schools that were once submerged in mud can revive, students can happily go to school again, and future paths can continue to open up.
