TPO - Considered a weak bridge, along with banning trucks when the Red River water level rises, the two wing lanes of Chuong Duong Bridge are also required to ban cars. However, due to frequent traffic jams on the bridge, it is difficult to implement.

In recent days, when the Red River water level rose, to ensure the safety of people and vehicles and to prevent possible risks, the Department of Transport - Hanoi City Police Department has banned trucks from 0.5 tons and passenger cars (except buses) from traveling on Chuong Duong Bridge.

Evaluating this after 3 days of implementation, the leader of Traffic Police Team No. 1, Hanoi Traffic Police Department said that traffic on Chuong Duong Bridge has been cleared and vehicles are moving quickly.

With two lanes on both sides of the bridge, because they are considered weak and can only handle vehicles weighing about 6 tons or less, during the recent stormy days, the inter-sectoral policy has been to only allow motorbikes and prohibit cars from entering this lane.

Therefore, in the first days of implementation, traffic police stationed at the ramp leading up to Long Bien regulated and divided traffic flow to only allow cars to enter the two middle lanes of the bridge, prohibiting them from entering the wing lanes.

However, during rush hour, the large number of cars and buses has led to prolonged congestion on the road leading to the bridge.

Along with that, from the inner city up, there are also many cars that do not comply, creating a lack of uniformity.

Even when the authorities are absent, cars and pickup trucks still drive normally into the two lanes on both sides of Chuong Duong bridge.

The Chuong Duong Bridge has been in use for 40 years and is considered a weak and degraded bridge in Hanoi. Currently, the Chuong Duong Bridge has about 95,000 vehicles passing through it every day, more than 8 times the design capacity.

The Department of Transport said that it is currently monitoring the water level of the Red River to make appropriate traffic adjustments. Accordingly, after the water level of the Red River has dropped to a safe level, along with restoring traffic to the level before the flooding, the Department of Transport also requested relevant units to promptly implement a major repair project for the bridge deck and infrastructure on Chuong Duong Bridge.

Speaking to Tien Phong reporter on the afternoon of September 12, Major Nguyen Manh Hung, Deputy Captain of Traffic Police Team No. 1, Hanoi Traffic Police Department, said that it has helped traffic on Chuong Duong bridge to be smooth, vehicles to move quickly and in accordance with the flood situation when the river water rose. "In the early days, the ban on passenger cars and trucks from 0.5 tons caused difficulties for traffic at both ends of the bridge, however, this implementation was later to ensure the safety of people, vehicles and infrastructure of Chuong Duong bridge, so traffic participants have complied with the new traffic regulation and traffic separation plan," Mr. Hung said.

Regarding the regulation of not allowing vehicles to enter the two wing lanes because the bridge lanes here are weak and degraded, Mr. Hung said that during rush hour, the number of cars in both directions is very large, if the regulation only allows them to enter the two lanes in the middle of the bridge, it will cause conflicts for the lanes and cause prolonged congestion for the roads leading to the bridge. Based on this reality, the traffic police on duty at the bridge head flexibly regulate and absolutely prohibit trucks and passenger cars from crossing the bridge.
