The ancient citadel has 6 sides, is hexagonal, about 4.42m high and has a total area of about 420,000m2 . The moat system surrounding the citadel is 28m wide and about 3.2m deep. The ancient people often called Vinh ancient citadel the 6-sided turtle citadel because when standing on Quyet mountain looking down, it looks like a turtle.
About 18 hours a day, the electric lights will be turned on at the three gates.

In 1804, under the reign of King Gia Long, Vinh Citadel was built in Vinh Dien Commune, Yen Truong District, Nghe An Province (now Cua Nam Ward, Vinh City). By 1831, under the reign of King Minh Mang, the citadel was built on a large scale with solid laterite stone.
In 1998, Vinh Citadel was ranked as a national monument by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). In 2004, Vinh City People's Committee implemented a project to restore and renovate 3 gates. Vinh Citadel is where President Ho Chi Minh spoke to the people of Nghe An when he visited his hometown in 1957 and 1961.
