Good news for Vietnam women's futsal team

The draw for the 2025 Asian Women's Futsal Championship has brought good news to the Vietnamese women's futsal team. The draw has placed Thanh Hang and her teammates in Group B with Iran, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

This is an easy group, because except for the defending champion Iran (ranked 9th in the world) with superior level, the Philippines and Hong Kong teams are not comparable to the Vietnamese women's futsal team in terms of level.

Vietnam women's futsal team is in an easy group

The Hong Kong women's futsal team is ranked 31st in the world, while the Philippines is ranked 59th. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women's futsal team is ranked 11th in the world. At the 2024 Southeast Asian Championship, coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang and his team defeated the Philippines 6-1. If they play well in the two matches against Hong Kong and the Philippines, Vietnam will definitely reach the quarterfinals.

The remaining groups of the 2025 women's futsal tournament also have a level of stratification. Group A has Uzbekistan (ranked 18th in the world) as the strongest team, followed by China (ranked 26th) and Taiwan (ranked 25th). The weakest team in the group is Australia, which is not yet ranked by FIFA.

In Group C, runner-up Japan (ranked 10th) will face Thailand (ranked 6th), Indonesia (ranked 24th) and Bahrain (ranked 36th).

The final round of the 2025 Asian Women's Futsal Championship will take place from May 7 to May 18 in China. In the most recent tournament in 2018, the Vietnamese women's futsal team finished fourth overall.

World Cup door is wide open

At the Asian women's futsal finals, the top six teams in each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.

If they play at their best, the Vietnamese women's futsal team will finish second in Group B. Here, coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang and his team will face the second team in Group A, most likely the Chinese or Taiwanese women's futsal team.

In general, meeting any team in Group A is not a big challenge, because the teams in this group are all ranked below the Vietnamese women's futsal team in the world rankings.

Coach Nguyen Dinh Hoang and his students will have tickets to the World Cup?

The real challenge will come in the semi-finals, when Mr. Dinh Hoang’s students can face Japan or Thailand. These are two of the three strongest teams in Asian women’s futsal at the moment. Thailand is the highest ranked Asian women’s futsal team on the FIFA rankings (ranked 6th), while Japan is the current runner-up.

However, the Vietnamese women's futsal team defeated Thailand in the 2024 Southeast Asian futsal final. This is a source of confidence for the Vietnamese futsal girls to make things happen.

Tickets to the Women’s Futsal World Cup will be awarded to the champions, runners-up and third-placed teams of Asia. In case the Philippines (the host of the World Cup) reaches the semi-finals, Asia will be awarded four spots. However, this is unlikely, as the Philippine women’s futsal team is ranked 59th in the world.

Therefore, the Vietnamese women's futsal team needs to at least reach the semi-finals to keep their hopes of attending the World Cup alive. The lucky draw has helped coach Dinh Hoang and his team have a smooth journey through the group stage and quarter-finals. To go further, Thanh Hang and her teammates must make every effort.
